| Jun-17-12 | | frogbert: rogge, maintenance work going on on the balcony? some "hms" requirements that weren't fulfilled, possibly? ;o) |
Jun-17-12
 | | Pedro Fernandez: < Eyal: I suppose 16.Qc2 was important as a preparation for the d4 break, unpinning the knight, because in case of exd4 White would like to recapture with it.> Well, the bishop was boring, hope Tomas did't play the wrong rook |

 | | kellmano: Though the comp on the official site disagrees with him. I guess it's very hard to commentate on 5 games at once and I like his disregard for computer lines. |
| Jun-17-12 | | frogbert: kellmano, possibly - but extracting a definition of rating inflation that quite clearly rests on a misunderstanding about what kind of measure ratings is makes very limited sense to me. so i'll pass. the rating measure is a *relative* one, yet people discuss issues like "inflation" as if it were an absolute one, with rating points as the measure's units. but the true "currency" of the rating system is rating *differences*, not rating numbers. of course, when also fide is more than a little confused about what their rating system measures, it's not that strange that the chess audience becomes confused, too. |

 | | Eyal: Even without a computer, it seems rather strange that Rogers evaluates Black as actually better. Looks like at least a pleasant game for White. |
Jun-17-12
 | | Pedro Fernandez: Computer will always do what the human brain wants |
Jun-17-12
 | | Marmot PFL: 17...Rbe8 looks like a "wrong rook", yet that is the move he thought the longest on. After a certain point it seems spending more thinking time is a case of diminishing returns. |
Jun-17-12
 | | Eggman: Regarding ratings inflation: last year IM Kenneth Regan gave a lecture in which he argued that there is no ratings inflation, and that the higher ratings of today simply reflect the fact that players are better. This sounded reasonable enough to me, until he mentioned that Staunton, if he were to play today, should have a rating of around 1900! Very difficult for me to swallow that one. |

 | | Pedro Fernandez: Now d column is open |
Jun-17-12
 | | Eyal: At chessdom, at least, they think differently: <20.Nc4 A coming up e4 by white will create multiple problems for black. We see now why the rook move [17...Rbe8] was the wrong one among the different options. Totally passive position for Tomashevsky, freedom for action for Carlsen. Best for the Russian player is to repair the rook mistake as soon as possible, by playing ...Rd8.> |
| Jun-17-12 | | frogbert: seems like tomashevsky managed to tie some knots for himself, just like carlsen wanted him to. :o) |
Jun-17-12
 | | rogge: <frog>, the premium expires these days, that's all. |
Jun-17-12
 | | lost in space: I would think about Nc3-a4-b6 here.... |
Jun-17-12
 | | Eyal: 21.Rcd1 followed by e4 looks natural and good for White. |
| Jun-17-12 | | Everyone: So Carlson is winning? |
Jun-17-12
 | | Pedro Fernandez: You see Marmot, your 2 moves did occur. |
| Jun-17-12 | | frogbert: carlsen has a small advantage on the board and a big one on the clock. |
Jun-17-12
 | | SetNoEscapeOn: Maybe the position isn't winning yet, but "we've seen this before." It's hard to survive against him when he has clear positional advantages. |
Jun-17-12
 | | Pedro Fernandez: I don't like the rook in f8. |
Jun-17-12
 | | Marmot PFL: <Pedro Fernandez> What move is that Bh3? He could have played that in one move, before white had the option of avoiding the trade. Anyway I want to learn from this game as I seem to get the white setup as black in the Sicilian and am seeing how to deal with Bc4 lines (Bc5 with reversed colors). |

Jun-17-12
 | | Eyal: 23...Qg4 (with the threat of Nh4+) looked dangerous, but White had a sufficient defence in 24.Ng1! (guarding the f3 square). |
Jun-17-12
 | | Marmot PFL: Speaking of rating inflation someone pointed out that Nakamura is just 2 or 3 wins from passing Fischer. |
Jun-17-12
 | | Eyal: <someone pointed out that Nakamura is just 2 or 3 wins from passing Fischer.> Just one, actually, at least on the live rating - he's at 2783 and Fischer reached 2785, if I remember correctly. |
Jun-17-12
 | | Ulhumbrus: With reversed colours the pawn formation resembles that of a Ruy Lopez as in the games Fischer vs Shocron, 1959 and Fischer vs Unzicker, 1959 both annotated in Bobby Fischer's book <My 60 memorable games> . This suggests for Black the knight manoeuvre ...Nf6-h7-g5 |
