 | | Eggman: With 9.Nc3 we have varied from Kasparov vs Karpov, 1990, one of the key games that brought this variation to top flight chess. |

| Jul-13-12 | | eternaloptimist: <Eggman> U r right about that K-K game in the Lyon/NYC WC match in '90 being a key in the resurgence of the Scotch. It was pretty much dead until Kasparov brought it back & lately it has been really popular so white can avoid playing against drawing openings like the Ruy Lopez (Berlin defense) & the Petroff defense. |
Jul-13-12
 | | waustad: It is strange that something as dyamic as the Marshall in the Ruy was called a drawing weapon too. Styles change. |
Jul-13-12
 | | Eyal: Scotch is pretty much off the table if Black plays 2...Nf6, do it doesn't really help to avoid the Petroff. |
Jul-13-12
 | | Sneaky: Personally I believe that nearly all of the old-fashioned openings are perfectly playable. Kasparov re-introduced the Scotch, Larsen had a fondness for the King's Bishop Opening (1.e4 e5 2.Bc4), Kramnik brought the Dutch Defense out of the club-level. I believe that unless an opening flagrantly violates principles, it will never be refuted. |
| Jul-13-12 | | eternaloptimist: <waustad> Excellent point & in this article GM Kaufman mentions that black has excellent drawing chances w/ the Marshall by giving up a to obtain the pair. Look under the section "THE BISHOP PAIR". |

 | | whiteshark: There's a full chapter (no.5) analysis on <The Scotch Endgame> in Esben Lund's "Rook vs two minor pieces" (quality chessbooks). There it goes with ...g6/Bg7 which doesn't apply here. |
| Jul-13-12 | | eternaloptimist: Of course there r some players who get a good attack w/ black in the Marshall. A lot of it depends on your motives (whether u want a draw or r determined to play for a win). That's an excellent article! Its definitely worth the time if u guys want to check it out! |
| Jul-13-12 | | Powerthinker: Yes, I think that the white is in the trouble, too. Black is ahead in development and it will cost for white at least a pawn. |
