Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-19-13  Jamboree: 30. Ra1!! is the most crushing retreat I've seen in a long time. Normally one thinks of winning moves as active, aggressive moves. In this case the winning move was retreating a piece back to its original square on the back rank! But it instantly solves what seemed like an impossible tactical booby trap. 29. ... d2!? at first appeared to be an amazing game-winning cheapo -- If 30. Bxa6 d1/Q! mates. If 30. Qxd2 Qxf1! mates. If white plunges ahead with his own unstoppable mating attack with 30. Bf6, then 30. ... Qxf1 mates again.

All moves for white seem to lose, except... 30. Ra1!!. Suddenly, black's tactics evaporate, while white's mating attack remains as unstoppable as before. Resigns.

Jan-19-13  Jim Bartle: Different idea but another rook retreat was 39...Ra8 in Karpov vs Taimanov, 1977

perfidious: <Jim> That Karpov loss was a surprise-at his zenith, he was losing no more than a game or two per year, and went on to lose this shocker four rounds later: Karpov vs Beliavsky, 1977.
