offramp: We have had this before: Nguyen apparently sounds a bit like WIN.

So today's pun would sound a bit like "Win-Win Situation", although of course it is not a "Win-Win Situation", it is definitely a "Win-Lose Situation". You can tell this from the symbol at the end of the game: 1-0. This is pronounced <"One-Nil">.

Oct-20-17  HaydenB: Pronounced Win, not Noo-yin...
Oct-20-17  7he5haman: <offramp> It's win-win because there are <two> Nguyens playing. Really not that hard to understand.

Not that it's a particularly good pun in any case.

Oct-20-17  goodevans: Oh, no, not another pun based on the surname <Nguyen>. These always seem to lead to lots of debate.

What I've found out on previous occasions...

There is no single accepted pronunciation of "Nguyen": North Vietnamese pronounce it slightly differently to South Vietnamese. In both cases it's a single syllable. The "N" is not fully pronounced but it's not fully silent either being something akin to the "n" in "singer". So the upshot is something like "nWin".

Maybe simplest if we just avoid Nguyen puns in future!

Oct-20-17  clement41: Why not 21 Re3 ? Because then 21...f4 22 Rh3 and black has the square e4 available for 22...Be4 protecting h7. The same line but on the 19th move is a tad more fun: 19 Nf5 gf 20 Re3 f4 21 Rh3 Be4 22 Bd3! fighting for h7 and trying to remove the defender but 22...Qc6 -+ holds everything
Oct-20-17  kevin86: White chases the king from pillar-to-post. Everyone "wins" when they play chess.

Playing out through move 40 according to the computer line posted above. The dust has settled and black has an advantage.

Oct-21-17  7he5haman: <morfishine: Some people are absolutely clueless when it comes to sarcasm>

What, the lowest form of wit? I couldn't care less about it. And I care even less for those smug faced "I think I'm so clever and above certain things and people so I'll be sarcastic about those things, and treat anyone who doesn't get my sarcasm as beneath me" types.

If you've got something worth saying then don't pretend like you don't by saying the exact opposite in a different tone, in some desperate attempt to look cool or funny to others - that's what I think but others will obviously disagree.

It's also very hard to notice in text form, especially if you don't know well the person who wrote it. (Offramp strikes me as a pedant from what little I know about him.)

Oct-21-17  7he5haman: *so it was natural for me to think that he was being serious
