Mar-26-13 | | Abdel Irada: <al wazir: I preferred 12. Bg5.> That is another winning line, and although less forcing, at least equally good. In fact, my computer* likes it better than the text. A plausible continuation: 12. ...Be6 13. Bxd8, Be3† 14. Kh1, Rxd8 15. Qh4 . Black has three pieces for the queen, but will lose either rook or bishop. ---
*Take /cum oceano salis/. My computer also thinks my rating is 2835. |

Mar-26-13 | | mistreaver: Tuesday.White to play.Easy.12?
I want to play:
12 Be5+
A)
12... Nf6
13 Bxf6+ Qxf6
14 Rxf6 Kxf6
15 Qxh6+ and white should win
B)
12... dxe5
13 Rf7 mate, or, 13 Qf7 mate
Time to check.

Yep. 1/1 |

Mar-26-13 | | zb2cr: White can win decisive material with 12. Be5+. Black has several choices: a. 12. ... dxe5?; 13. Qf7# (a swallow-tail mate pattern). b. 12. ... Nf6; 13. Bxf6+, Qxf6; 14. Rxf6, Kxf6; 15. Qxh6+ and White is up by Q+P vs. R+B and has prospects of winning the Black Rook on h8. b. 12. ... Qf6; 13. Bxf6+, Nxf6; 14. Rxf6 transposing into variation (a). |
|
Mar-26-13 | | David2009: R Narmontas vs G Petraitis, 2009 White 12? White is down a piece for a pawn. Try 12.Bg5 threatening Rf7#. 12...Qd7 fails to 13.Bxh6+ Nxh6 Qg5#,
so Black must give up his Q to struggle on. Time to
check:

http://www.chessvideos.tv/endgame-t.... You are white, drag and drop the move you want to make The resourceful robot defends tenaciously in both variations. In theory both lines win but in practice it isn't so easy. Have fun trying to complete the win - and 'chapeau' if you find it without computer assistance. Please feel free to post the win with either line. |

Mar-26-13 | | ChessGeezer: Is there anything wrong with 12. Bxh6+? I think black's only response is Nxh6, which is followed by Qf7#. That seems easier/faster. I must be missing something. |
|
Mar-26-13 | | ChessGeezer: Duh. Never mind. Nxf7... |
|
Mar-26-13 | | kevin86: The bishop in moved to clear the alley for the mate. Bh6+ doesn't work as the knight can guard the crucial f7 square and vacate the g8 square |
|
Mar-26-13 | | MountainMatt: 12. Be5+! and it's time for black to resign, though he didn't...and now, playing through the game, I think I see why he didn't. There is no way white should have gotten away with winning off those two sacs (moves 6 & 8). Infuriating! If I had been playing black, at the moment of checkmate I would have punched Mr. Narmontas in the face. Yes, I have issues. |
|
Mar-26-13 | | HowDoesTheHorsieMove: Blech!
Missed it. I though after Be5 that dxe5 was the only possible response, but I totally missed Nf6. The result may be the same, but I didn't see it. |
|
Mar-26-13 | | YouRang: The bio on the player page for Gintautas Petraitis (black) just says: <He is a GMC.> What's a GMC? |
|
Mar-26-13 | | Alex56171: I missed this. I thought 12.Bxh6+ Nxh6 13.Qf7 was mate. I have not seen 13... Nxf7. What a chump! |

Mar-26-13 | | David2009: R Narmontas vs G Petraitis, 2009 postscript: I have now answered my own question and have beaten Crafty End Game Trainer without the aid of a computer - but with a lot of trial and error. From the puzzle position, here's my winning line:
12.Bg5 Bf5 13.Bxd8 Rxd8 14.Rxf5 Be3+ 15.Kf1 Nxf5 16.exf5 Nf6 17.Qf3 Rhe8 18.Nd5 Nxd5 19.Qxd5 Re5 20.Qd3 Rxf5+ 21.Qxf5 Rf8 22.Qxf8+ Kxf8 23.Ke2 Bd4 24.c3 Bf6 to reach

and at last we have a straightforward ending. Even so, I only drew it on my first attempt. The link to Crafty EGT puzzle position was given in my earlier post (R Narmontas vs G Petraitis, 2009): here's a further link to the ending reachable at move 24:
http://www.chessvideos.tv/endgame-t.... Enjoy practicing your winning technique! I intend to post the further solution in my forum in due course, because I learnt something from finding the winning line. Once I found it I asked myself, what took me so long? I leave it to the interested reader to find the win with the game line 12.Be5+ using the first Crafty EGT link. |
|
Mar-26-13 | | YouRang: <perfidious> Thank you. :-) So perhaps this was a grandmaster correspondence game? Stepping right into mate on move 13 is not what you would expect of a correspondence GM. |
|
Mar-26-13 | | David2009: R Narmontas vs G Petraitis, 2009 second postscript: The fastest win against Crafty End Game Trainer that I have found starts with the game line 12.Be5+ and continues 12...Nf6 13.Rxf6 Be3+ 14.Kh1 Qxf6 15.Bxf6+ Kxf6 16.Nd5+ Kg7 17.Nxe3 Rf8 18.Qg5+ Kh8 19.Rf1 Rxf1+ 20.Nxf1 Bd7 21.Qf6+ Kg8 22.Qxd4 and I can safely resign this position on the EGT's behalf. So 12.Bg5+ seems to be the harder route to victory. |
|
Mar-26-13
 | | Eggman: A few here seem to have missed that after 12.Be5+ Nf6 13.Bxf6+ Qxf6 14.Rxf6 Black has 14...Be3+. Nevertheless after 15.Kh1 Kxf6 16.Nd5+ White gets queen and pawn vs rook and bishop, which should win. |
|
Mar-26-13 | | snakebyt: I fell for the Bxh6 trap too. I'll take my time, next time. |
|
Mar-26-13 | | Patriot: This took me too long. I looked at 12.Bxh6+ and 12.Be5+. 12.Bxh6+ Nxh6 and white doesn't seem to have a good way to proceed. 12.Be5+ dxe5 (12...Nf6 13.Bxf6+ ) 13.Qxe5+ Nf6
So then I finally looked at 12.Be5+ dxe5 13.Qf7# - easy enough. I just didn't see it right away. |
|
Mar-26-13 | | James D Flynn: White has sacrificed B and N for a pawn and a strong attack on the Black K, he must now mate or win a lot of material. If the B on f4 were not there White would Mate with Qf7# the win therefore requires a B move with either check or gain of at least a R.
12.Be5+ Nf6 13.Bxf6+ Qxf6 14.Rxf6 Kxf6 15.Qxh6+( White has won Q and B for a R, and has Q and pawn for R and N plus continuing attack.) Kf7 (if Ke7 16.Qg7 wins at least a R) 16.Rf1+ Ke8 17.Qg7 now the R on h8 is lost and White has Q and pawn for a B with continuing attack. |
|
Mar-26-13 | | BOSTER: <YouRang> <Stepping right into mate on move 13 is not what you would expect of a CC.GM>.
But, from other side of this event, it gives the possibility to be invited in <CG> DB club.
Not too many have such pleasure to be choosen. |
|
Mar-27-13 | | stst: 12.Be5+
IF (A).. Nf6, 13.BxN+ QxB, 14.RxQ KxR, 15.Rf1+ Ke6, 16.Qf7+ Ke5, 17.Qf6#
IF (B).. PxB, 13.Qf7#
Both initial BxB+ or QxB+ won't work as NxB or NxQ annihilates the attack. |
