Kibitzer's Corner
May-15-13  Balmo: Lovely game from Howell. 24 Qxg6! 26 Re7!

Phony Benoni: I've never fully trusted these lines where White plays Bd3 blocking the pawn. There's a dread that the pawn will remain unmoved for the entire game, and the poor bishop on c1 will be foredoomed to a dreary existence of protecting it..

That's sort of what happens. But it all works out for the best.

I thought, that's it, just a move or so left. In fact Black still had some clever shots available.

Dec-12-16  clement41: Lovely game. Once white parts with his queen he'd better be confident in his calculations and assessment of the attacking compensation else he's simply dead. The kind of deal that requires nerves of steel
Dec-12-16  Ironmanth: What a game for a cold drear Monday! Thanks for this awesome choice.

  iking: 24. Qg6 - a lightning bolt from a white cloud ...
Dec-12-16  scormus: Great game, and some good lessons.

<offramp> I thought the same as I played it through, the position would make a good weekend POTD.

With these very open positions there are always chances for both sides. You're way ahead on points but your opponent lands "a lucky punch" that you hadn't seen coming. Howell did well to steer it home. The LCC game Topalov-Caruana is an example of it going the other way
