eykca: I'm with <ChessHigherCat>. not exactly a firecracker.
Mar-10-17  7he5haman: Who said GOTDs had to be "firecrackers"?

I found it interesting enough, although I appreciate that others my not.

Well, being "Game of The Day," most folks would expect it to be impressive.

There's nothing in the selection criteria about "*most* people finding it interesting"; all that matters is *Chessgames* finding the pun good and the game interesting:

"Entries are judged on the quality of the pun, as well as the merits of the game itself. In order to have a suggestion accepted, you'll want to find an interesting game and then suggest a clever title for it."

Pun Submission Page

Maybe those who moan about what they view as a poor GOTD should spend more time submitting their own puns for games they deem worthy and less time moaning - but that may be too radical an idea for this site, where people love to moan about everything.

<morfishine> you'd better go back to bed then.

Once: I found the game interesting. To be sure, it's not a sacrificial firework display but not all games will be.

It could almost be a primer on good solid winning chess.

I like the way that white kept his pieces active, especially his bishop pair.

Doubling rooks on a open file, check.

Queen invasion, check.

Pins and piling up on a pinned piece.

Exchanging down to a won endgame, check.

This isn't wagu beef or a steak, but it is a good honest burger. It does the job.

Mar-10-17  dTal: What is the pun? :-)

ChessHigherCat: Personally, I'm no enemy of puns on principle but I think it's a bad idea to choose a mediocre game solely for the pun, given all the amazing game collections to choose from on this website (notably Phony Benoni's) I think the GOTD should be devoted to exceptional and awe-inspiring (as opposed to merely "ah" inspiring) games.

HeMateMe: The puns generate conversation here, activity. Usually they are high level GM games, or at least fun tactical outbursts.

The daily puzzle games, halfway through the week to the end, are always from high quality GM games.

ChessHigherCat: <HeMateMe> You're preaching to the converted there, I hardly ever write a single comment without some kind of pun, as you can see above (which probably hasn't contributed to my popularity since most people either don't get them and/or have no sense of humor), but I'm just saying they should be combined with interesting games, as they usually are even early in the week.

morfishine: <7he5haman> The game was ho-hum, not worthy of "Game of the Day" status, thats obvious

....and the game title was just another Lame-O play on word using a players name

So whats your point?

No one was moaning.

You seem to be obsessed with the word "moaning", so you are hoping to find examples of it in other posts.

Keep on looking :)

Mar-10-17  Sally Simpson: How about....

The Pun Policeman.

The Polite Pun Policeman.

The Perfectly Polite Pun Policeman from Peckham.

Mar-10-17  JohnBoy: I agree w <Once>. Solid chess. Converting a better position into a tactical advantage.

I do't understand why 22.Qg2 rather than Qc6+ immediately. Thoughts?

Mar-11-17  Sally Simpson: Hi JohnBoy,

I've just posted on the Morphy Opera thread. Came here to see if Morf like being called a Pun Policeman.

22 Qg2, maybe because he had Bxg6 ideas. but here. (white to play)

click for larger view

White has a Morphy at the opera type sac on d7.

24.Rxd7 Rxd7 25 Rhd1 Only move appears to be 25...Qb7 but then 26.Be4.

Looks OK. Quite a coincidence.

OhioChessFan: So <morfishine> has wasted another 2 minutes of his life moaning about the puns. What's new? FWIW, if I was cg.c, I'd ban him from doing on the basis of duplicate posts. Seriously, thousands of posts saying the same thing?

"Has Sang gat'in it yet?"

  tpstar: "Ram Emanuel"

This was a competitive game until White won a piece at the end using the Pin motif. Perhaps the two Pawn sacrifice was deeper than it looks.

Juniors and students, Americans say "pile on" the pinned piece (attack it again) while British use "pile up" because they must use their own unique version of proper English. :P

Personally I would like to see the pun use "au gratin", which rhymes with Hasangatin

Then the opposite of an unworthy game is a punworthy game
