  paulalbert: Easy to find. Interesting mating net where black's own R and N plug any escape routes.

  gawain: 27 Rb7+ Nxb7
28 Na6#

Chess is endlessly interesting! This is a pattern I think I have never seen before.

  keypusher: Took me a while, because I forgot the bishop was covering c8.
Jun-17-13  kevin86: I can't believe I missed it! I couldn't find the quick mate-so I settled for Rxf8+ Rxf8 Nd7+ winning back the rook to be a piece up!

I missed a Monday puzzle...what a horrible start!

  chrisowen: At highball a joke rook takes the biscuit yeah farm,

registrate rook across knight probing because a6,

becomes available padlock b8 king be hoofing.

27.Rxb7+ or believe 27.Rxf8 again many it hope this right railing off in c6 all fair game really it hind read g4 plus c5 and f6 e7 formed a quad glib,

to garner in d8xb7 and c5 will stag germane crow,

man seer g4 cover in c8 at concrete allegory.

28.na6# nice in no time like gg be betcha b7.

Jun-17-13  BOSTER: The knight on the edge is ..., but not always.

`<sfm> <the mate to the right is easier to see>. This is because you are not left-handed.

Jun-17-13  tcostin: Drat! I saw the Rxf8 line almost immediately which would give White decisive material, so I didn't look for anything better.
Jun-17-13  ehins: Rff7 also leads to mate against any black defence.
Jun-17-13  Jabot: I second ehins' Rff7.
Jun-17-13  James D Flynn: Material is equal but all Black’s pieces are on the Back rank and White has threats against his K with 27.Rxc6 a5(if Nxc6 28.Rxb7# or if bxc6 28.Na6# and Rc8# is threatened so Black creates a flight square at a7) 28.Rcc7(threatens 29.Rxb7# Nxb7 30 Rxb7# and Black cannot defend b7 by Ra7 because 31.Rc8#) Nfe6 29.Bxe6 Nxe6 30.Rxb7+ Kc8 31.Nxe6 and there is no answer to the threat 32.Rec7#

  LoveThatJoker: Cool! A GM Pfleger puzzle!

<27. Rff7! Nfe6>

(27..Nde6 28. Re8+ Nd8 29. Rxd8#)

<28. Rxb7+ Nxb7>

(28...Kc8 29. Rfc7#)

<29. Rxb7+ Kc8 30. Bxe6+ Kd8 31. Rd7+ Ke8 32. Bf7+ Kf8 33. Ne6#>

Jun-17-13  Boerboel Guy: There are many ways to win here.
I chose 27 Rxc6 and did not look for anything better....
Jun-17-13  Loque7771: Same observation as Morfishine and sfm. Found Rxf8 in original pattern and Rxg7 in mirrored. Really interesting.
Jun-17-13  Patriot: This wasn't immediately clear until I began looking at 27.Na6+.

27.Rxb7+ Nxb7 28.Na6# - Now it works.

Jun-17-13  tbentley: <ferrabraz: The second best move is 28. Rd6? (the "?" is for not giving mate in two), wining the house.>

Actually Rd6 is the fourth best move, since it's mate in 7. b5 (not that anyone would play such a move) appears to be mate in 12. The best I've found (sliding forward with Rybka) for Rxc6 is mate in 17.

Jun-17-13  tbentley: If this were a real game, my guess is that I'd play 27. Rxf8 Rxf8 28. Nd7+? (Rxb7+ still works), and still win easily.
Jun-17-13  morfishine: <sfm> & <Loque7771> Thanks for looking. I thought it odd that an inverse pattern would not be as easily seen. Its not pleasant to miss the main line of a Monday POTD

Luckily, there is more than one winning continuation :)

Jun-17-13  Jambow: @Kevin86 I struggled myself me thinks Tuesday or an easier Wednesday was more in line.
Jun-17-13  Jambow: No doubt a Righteous loss by Zadok!
Jun-17-13  BOSTER: <Loque7771> <a missing file>- <Really interesting >.

The reason you didn't recognize the known pattern because you hadn't looked at the pos. from the perspective of Black. A.Soltis called that the optical board illusions.

Sometimes it is very useful to look at the pos. from both sides of the board, even in <POTD> white to play.

Jun-17-13  naruto00122: nifty mate in two
Feb-04-19  N.O.F. NAJDORF: I saw the finish immediately.

Why didn't black castle instead of playing Nc5 and leaving his king exposed in the center?

"Why didn't black castle instead of playing [14...Nc5] and leaving his king exposed in the center?"

7...Kxd8.
