Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-20-14  Karpova: This game is from an article on the Four Knights, which originally appeared in the 'Hamburger Nachrichten', October 2, 1910.

17.Qxf6 receives an <!>, but stronger appears 17.Qg3+ Kh8 18.Qf2 Qxb5 19.Qxf6+ Kg8 20.Rf3 - thereby the Black ♕ is forced to take on b5 and doesn't have the option ...Qxd2 as in the game.

18.Be8 this move is not annotated, although it appears strange. Why not 18.Rf3 which looks strong and forcing?

In the final position, it is said that White won after a longer struggle (<und Weiß gewann nach längerem Kampfe>) according to the 'Rotterdamsche Courant'. Does White actually have an advantage in the final position?

Source: Pages 93-94 of the March 1911 'Wiener Schachzeitung'

Feb-20-14  thomastonk: The game appeared on September 25, 1910 in "Nieuwe Rotterrdamsche Courant" on page 6. Here is the 'permanent url': http://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=d....

It was an offhand game, and at least the part we know is poorly played.

<Does White actually have an advantage in the final position?> Yes, the Black king is weak, and thereby Black will have difficulties to co-ordinate. But I see nothing forced.
