This game was played in Leningrad in the <Third USSR Junior Championship 1938>.

1938 proved a momentous year for <Smyslov>- he finished Middle School, and he won this tournament.

Grigory Levenfish gave him 1st prize of an inscribed clock.

In his book "Smyslov's 125 Selected Games," Smyslov remarks that this clock "continues to count out the time of my chess career."
