whiteshark: <Novelty of stem-game: 15. e4> It seems that black gets sufficient compensation for the Xchange Her bs♗ is an 'unopposed giant' and white's pawn structure is kind of weak/vulnerable, too.

HeMateMe: A bit of a flat tire. Why did Hou sac the exchange, if she wasn't going to do anything with it?

After 12. ♘d2 an exchange sacrifice is more or less forced as white is ready to play ♘c4 hitting d6 with strong pressure. However the official commentator of the tournament had a game (Moiseenko - Miroshnichenko 2009) where he played in a different way : 12.... ♖b4 13. a3 ♖xb2!? 14. ♘c4 ♖b6.

It was still possible to select another plan than the one starting with 10... ♘e4, though, like the standard ♘a6 and ♗g4. But Hou Yifan was obviously fine with a quick draw as black after three wins at the start and before the rest day.
