An Englishman: Good Evening: Had a lot of trouble finding where White went wrong. 12.Rh3 might be one such place, because Black (with 14...Rg4!) isolates it from the rest of White's forces. 18.Qa3 also looks problematic, as it virtually forces Black to turn his attention to the Queen side, starting with 18...Bf8.
Jan-20-19  Ironmanth: First impression is that John was totally overwhelmed by superior piece placement. The tide really shifted to a queen side debacle. Thanks for this one, chessgames!

offramp: I have had a look right through the big book in the hallway, but I cannot figure out the pun.

I get the Dear Watson bit - it’s like a Sherlock Holmes thing. I don’t get the Doctoral part.

offramp: I think it means that instead of being “elementary”, ie the most basic plane of educational ability, this game is “doctoral” ie at the most rarified level of educability.

In the course of conducting cursory research for the literary quote that this pun is based on—"Elementary, My Dear Watson"—I discovered that the character Watson was, in point of fact, a Doctor (of some ilk).

Hence, I concluded that using the term <Doctoral> was more apropos than something like "High School" or "Collegiate"...

OhioChessFan: I thought it was a bit in reference to Doctor Watson and a bit in reference to <offramp's> take per the rarified non-elementary nature of the game.

offramp: I fed it into Huskisson's Internet Pun Index and was surprised to see that it gives today's pun a measly 3/10. That's pretty low.
Jan-20-19  Saniyat24: Pompowsky opening where you give away you bishop for no reason....!
Jan-20-19  AlicesKnight: Possibly - given the vain efforts to use the White KR - "A lame entry, my dear Watson....". Compare the White QR in Saemisch vs Alekhine, 1943 - also a dead end.
