Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-12-16  suenteus po 147: So this game is fascinating to play through (for me). At first, when I came to 18.Bb5, I didn't understand black's reply at all. However, upon some ongoing study I see that black's position after 19.Qa4 is practically broken. There is no way to defend his knight. 19...Re7 is met with 20.d5, and 19...Bc8 is met with 20.Bc6, which is even worse. I am super impressed by Hou's opening set up. Her d5 pawn is a thorn in black's center, and after 19...a6 20.Bxd7 b5 she is able to pick up three pawns in addition to the piece exchange because her bishop at f4 covers the crucial c7 square that would allow black to defend both his bishop at b7 and the c5 pawn. And even though she ends up giving a pawn back 9 moves later, she still maintains her material advantage into the won endgame. Superior opening play exploiting black's cramped, indefensible setup, solid middlegame, leading to an end where she is simply better. This is the way I'd like to play if I still played.
