Oct-01-17  backyard pawn: <RKight> At first, that's what I thought too. Except that Black is in check and must deal with that first!
Oct-01-17  diagonalley: hardly "insane" ... but very entertaining... got the first couple of moves - unusually for a sunday :-)

  al wazir: I got the first three moves without having the slightest idea of how to continue; nor do I see how to win if white had played differently, e.g., 38. Qd7.
Oct-01-17  Walter Glattke: Yes, 40.-Qf1# White must play 36.Qa8+ Kg7 37.cxd5 e3!? 38.f6+
Oct-01-17  dragonfish1803: al wazir:
if 38.Qd7,Bg2+;
39.Kxg2,Qg4+;
40.Kf1/h1,Qf3+;
41.Kg1,Qf2+
42.Kh1,Qxe1+
43.Kg2,Qd2+
Oct-01-17  dragonfish1803: 38.Qe7 is more stubborn but after 43.Kg2(as above) Black goes 43...,Qf2+; 44.Kh3,Qxf5+;45.Kxh4/Kg2,Qg5+ and wins the pawn ending
Oct-01-17  lost in space: <<RKnight>: Black had a faster finish: 40. Qf1#>

No, 40...Qf1# is illegal as after 40. Rxg2+ the black king is in check.

Oct-01-17  lost in space: Got also the first few moves within my usual timeframe of 1-2 minutes
Oct-01-17  mel gibson: That was too hard for me.
The computer says:

35. Nd5 Rxd5 (35. .. Rxd5 (♖d8xd5 c4xd5
e4-e3 ♖e1-f1 ♕f4-d4 ♕a7-b8+ ♔g8-h7 ♕b8-f4 e3-e2+ ♕f4xd4 e2xf1♕+ ♔g1xf1 c5xd4 d5-d6 ♗f7-e8 ♔f1-f2 ♗e8-b5 ♔f2-f3 ♔h7-g7 ♔f3-e4 d4-d3 d6-d7 ♗b5xd7 ♔e4xd3 ♔g7-f6 ♔d3-e4 ♗d7-c6+ ♔e4-f4 ♗c6xg2 ♔f4-g4 h4-h3) +4.49/20 159)

score for black +4.49 depth 20

Oct-01-17  claudi: My chess engine plays 35...Qd2 after 10 minutes.Rxd5 is better.
Oct-01-17  patzer2: Today's Sunday puzzle combination (35...?) solution 35...Rxd5! and the follow-up up with the surprising "pawn drops" 36...e3! and 38...h3 reminded me of the theme song "Rain Drops Keep Falling on My Head" from the 1969 movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."

One interesting aspect of the combination is that after 35...Rxd5! 36. cxd5 e3! (not 36...Bxd5? 37. Qxb6 +-,) if White plays 37. Rf1 (diagram below)

Black wins after 37...Qd4 38. Qb8+ (diagram below)

38...Kh7! 39. Qf4 e2+ -+ but not 38...Kg7? 39. Qf4 e2+ +-. Can you guess why? It has to do with the availability of an in-between move after 38. Kh7! 38. Qf4 e2+ 40. Qxd4 -+ that's not available after 38. Kg7? 39. Qf4! e2+ 40. Qxd4+ +-.

P.S.: See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raind... for the history of the song "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head." The lyrics written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach can be viewed at http://www.metrolyrics.com/raindrop..., and a video recording of the song by the original artist B.J. Thomas is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPG...

Oct-01-17  WorstPlayerEver: 35... Rd5. 37. cd5 Bd5 38. Rf1 Qd4

38. Rg1 h3 39. Qb6 hg2 40. Rg2 Bg2 41. Kg2 Qg4

Oct-01-17  patzer2: White's decisive mistake was 35. Nd5? allowing 35...Rxd5!! -+. Instead, Stockfish 8 indicates 35. Rd2 = (0,.00 @ 32 depth) or 35. h3 = (0.00 @ 32 depth) hold the position level.
Oct-01-17  WorstPlayerEver: <patzer2>

Ghe I didn't even think about 38... Kg7. Thanks anyway!

Oct-01-17  morfishine: Not much insanity here, <35...Rxd5> seems the most natural facilitating the positioning of the WSB on the a1-h8 diagonal

*****

Oct-01-17  WorstPlayerEver: The a8-h1 diagonal, yes.
Oct-01-17  AlicesKnight: Found the first 2-3 moves in here. I was not sure about why 38.Rf1 was not possible even with ...Qd4 as an answer, but I like <patzer2>'s comment above on ...Kh7.
Oct-01-17  patzer2: Correction: It has to do with the availability of an in-between move after 38...Kh7! 39. Qf4 e2+ 40. Qxd4 -+ that's not available after 38...Kg7? 39. Qf4 e2+ 40. Qxd4+ +-.

P.S.: <WorstPlayerEver> and <AlicesKnight> Thanks! I was a sucker for 38...Kg7? when I initially tried to solve/mentally compute today's Sunday puzzle.

Oct-01-17  morfishine: <WorstPlayerEver> lol, I stand corrected

  Jimfromprovidence: After 35...Rxd5 36. cxd5 e3 white can also try 37 Re2. Black continues with 37...Qd4, below (seeing 38...Qd1+)

If 38 Qb8+, then 38...Kh7 (not 38 ...Kg7 as <patzer2> aptly noted). White now plays 39 Kf1 to protect his rook.

How does black win from here?

  Check It Out: I saw 35...Rxd5 36.cxd5 36...e3 37.Kh1 but then I started dreaming that 37...e2 would be the move to play and lost the thread.

<patzer2> Fun story: A good friend of mine annually requests that I provide guitar and voice for her birthday party. This year, two weeks back, it was in conjunction with celebrating her newly built deck. the weather in Seattle has been beautiful for months but wouldn't you know it, a gray and rainy day besets her party and crashes the deck celebration. I had prepared "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" just in case, and, not to be outdone by Seattle weather, led a rousing 30 person sing through of it under pop-up cover. Afterwards, someone asked who wrote that song, and I told them it was sung famously by BJ Thomas but written by Hal David and Burt Bacharat, which I had learned while charting it. So, your mention of it rung a bell!

Oct-01-17  whiteshark: A well co-ordinated ♕+♗+♙e3+♙h4 attack against ♔+♖
Oct-01-17  SpamIAm: After 35...Rd5 does <Walter Glattke>'s zwischenzug 36. Qa8+ make a difference? After 36...Kg(h)7 37. cd the d=pawn is protected by the queen and black cannot play 37...Bd5.

  An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Only half credit. Saw the main line but thought it was a speculative sacrifice, not a forced-win combination.
Oct-01-17  patzer2: <Check It Out> Thanks! I'm also a fan of BJ Thomas's original rendition of the hit song "Hooked on a Feeling" written by Mark James.

The BJ Thomas version of "Hooked on a Felling" can be heard at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1Y....

Some prefer the Blue Swede band version of "Hooked on a Feeling" as used in the 2014 movie "Guardians of the Gallaxy" at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZK.... Some refer to the Blue Swede rendition of "Hooked on a Feeling" as the "Ooga Chaka" version.
