Oh @#$%. I made exactly the same mistake <abuzic> made, visioning the end result wrongly. Black is in the ideal position to demolish all and everything that the White king has in front of him with <33....Nh3+ 34.Kh1 Ng3+ 35.hxg3 Nf2+ 36.Kg1>. However, here I went with the abysmal 36....Qh1+? 37.Kxf2 +- that as good as it gets hands the win to White: <Black has no double control over g2 due to g3>. Doubled pawns, annoying but easy to miss. Of course Black gets an enormous advantage after <36....Nxd3 -+> but I wanted to mate instead. Shoot. |

Guess only a well timed Homer "DOH!" is in order. To keep it at least a little bit on topic: after 32....Nh3+ it's obvious f3 is controlling g2, therefore the combination with Qh1+ works as Black DOES control g2. What's more interesting, and what Black probably missed, was <32....Nh3+ 33.gxh3>, where the very simple and subtle, but otherwise intriguing <33....Qg5+ with Qg2#> ends the game on the spot. Hard to spot, because the Queen sneaks in front of the King where this would seem illogical (with a Rook behind the King). |
