Mar-02-18 | | pauldo: Got the gist of it but didn't anticipate white's delaying pin. |

Mar-02-18 | | ChessHigherCat: 19....Nf3 looks forcing 20. Bxf3 Bxf3 21. gxf3 Rg6+ 22. Kh1 Qh3 and datz dat. Maybe it's a Friday puzzle because white can give back the piece with 21. Qxg7+ Qxg7 22. Bxg7 with both sides threatening BxR. |
|
Mar-02-18 | | ChessHigherCat: <pauldo> ditto! We'missed the prettiest part, Qh3 |

Mar-02-18 | | agb2002: Black has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair. White threatens Qxb7. The white queen and the bishop on b2 aim at g7. The typical move is 19... Nf3+:
A) 20.gxf3 Rg6+ 21.Kh1 Qh3
A.1) 22.Rg1 Bxf3+ 23.Bxe2 Qxf3+ 24.Rg2 Qxg2#.
A.2) 22.Qxg7+ Rxg7 23.Bxg7 Bxf3+ 24.Bxf3 Qxf3+ 25.Kg1 Kxg7 - + [q vs R]. B) 20.Bxf3 Bxf3
B.1) 21.gxf3 Rg6+ 22.Kh1 Qh3 23.Qxg7+ (23.Rg1 Qxf3+ 24.Rg2 Qxg2#) 23... Rxg7 as in A.2. B.2) 21.Qxg7+ Qxg7 22.Bxg7 Rg6
B.2.a) 23.Bxf8 Rxg2+ 24.Kh1 Rg3(4..7)#.
B.2.b) 23.g3 Kxg7 - + [b vs P].
B.3) 21.Rd2 Rg6 22.g3 Qxh2+ 23.Kxh2 Rh6+ 24.Kg1 Rh1#. B.4) 21.Rfe1 Rg6 22.Kf1 (22.g3 Qxh2+ and mate in two) 22... Rxg2 wins (23.Rxd6 Rg1+ 24.Kxg1 Qg5+ 25.Kf1 Qg2#). |

Mar-02-18 | | AlicesKnight: Again, saw the right moves not necessarily in the right order ..... |
|
Mar-02-18 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Ack. I overlooked that, in main lines after ... Qh3, the f3 pawn would then be hanging for a dangerous check. |
|
Mar-02-18 | | gofer: I was not sure quite what to try first; Bxg2, Bf3 or Nf3+. They all looked pretty good. The other
problem I had was opening up the a1-h8 diagonal meant that I had to be sure that Qxg7+ was not
available at any point - or if it was available it wasn't going to be a problem!!! After quite a while I found the correct sequence... <19 ... Nf3+!>
20 Kh1? Qxh2#
20 gxf3? Rg6+
21 Kh1 Qh3
22 Qxg7+ Rxg7 (Qxb7 Qg2# and Rg1 Bxf3+ mating)
23 Bxg7 Bxf3+
24 Bxf3 Qxf3+
25 Kg1 Kxg7 +-
<20 Bxf3 Bxf3>
<21 Qxg7+ Qxg7+> <22 Bxg7 Rg6!!> The killer blow. Rf8 is immune as 23 ... Rxg2+ 24 Kh1 Rg6#. <23 g3 Kxg7>
White can resign. Bf3 stands god-like commanding all he surveys. White
can try to survive, but in reality its going to be very difficult. ~~~
Totally missed <21 Qc4!>, but perhaps it was not actually that good. It
got dealt with very swiftly! |

Mar-02-18 | | Mayankk: I looked at Qh3 for a while but completely missed how it deals with Rg8, using the capture at f3. So I kept trying to make Bxg2 work, totally missing the power of nf3+. 3.5/5 for me this week. Got most of the forcing moves in yesterday’s puzzle but didn’t calculate right till the end. I don’t usually bother to spend too much time on Sat and Sun puzzles - as mostly the nuanced calculations are beyond me. So it will stay at 3.5 I guess. |

Mar-02-18 | | patzer2: Got the first two moves 19...Nf3+! 20. Bxf3 Bxf3 -+ of today's Friday puzzle solution, after which I anticipated 21.gxf3 Rg6+ 22.Kh1 Qh3 -+ when play might continue 23.Qxg7+ Rxg7 24.Bxg7 Qxf3+ -+ (Mate-in-21 @ 48 ply, Stockfish 8).
Like <pauldo> and <Chesshighercat>, I was also surprised by the pin 21. Qc4. However, I think I would have been able to find the pin breaking move 21...d5 -+ (-3.02 @ 35 ply, Stockfish 8) easy enough. Though not as strong as 21...d5 -+, also winning after 21. Qc4 are 21...Kh8 -+ (35 ply, Stockfish 8) and 21...b5 22. Qb3 Kh8 -+ (-2.30 @ 35 ply, Stockfish 8). The final shot 22...Qh3! is pretty, but not so difficult. Capturing the poison Queen is technically best, but it's also a resignable prospect because White is down a Rook for a pawn after 22...Qh3! 23.gxh3 Rg6+ 24.Qg4 fxg4 25.Rd6 Rxd6 26.hxg4 Bxg4 -+ (-5.95 @ 33 ply, Stockfish 8). P.S.: White's decisive mistake is 19. Qc7?, allowing our Friday puzzle solution 19...Nf3+ -+ (-2.75 @ 35 ply, Stockfish 8). Instead, 19. Qb3 Qg6 20. f3 ⩲ to ± (+0.64 @ 30 ply, Stockfish 8) leaves White in good shape. |

White's position is not fun, but material is even. And it's a rapid game. If someone can explain what I'm missing, I'll appreciate it. TIA. |

 | | gawain: ...Qh3 at some point was going to be the key move. for sure. But how to get there? Thought about starting with that very tempting 19...Nf3+ but concluded, lazily, that this would not work! |
|
Mar-02-18 | | landshark: Saw it thru to 21 Qc4 and thought ....Bxd1; 22. Rxd1, Kh8 sufficient for the win. Nice solid looking position with a clear exchange up. Didn't choose 21... d5 because I missed the nice shot ...Qh3! which is clearly more forcing. |
|
Mar-02-18 | | landshark: Looking further into my line:
21...Bxd1 22. Bxg7 Qg6 23. Rxd1 Kxg7 24. Rxd6 Rff6 and Black is down 2 pawns but a clear rook ahead.
Or 22. Bxg7 Qg6 23. Bxf8 Bf3 24. g3 Kxf8 and black is winning. |

Mar-04-18 | | petemccabe: Thanks ahj68 and Dionysus. How obvious. That's why I'm just a 1500. |
