|Jun-19-18|| ||OhioChessFan: This is a rare occasion where I think a position presented as a puzzle makes it harder to find than it would have been over the board. I'm with the group who was tantalized by the back rank weakness and spent a lonng time looking for some way to take advantage of it. I think it might have been easier to find on a Wednesday or Thursday, for that matter, just to get me away from trying to displace that dastardly d2 Knight.|
|Jun-19-18|| ||OhioChessFan: <stacase: You know, if this weren't a puzzle, and over the board I would have seen it rather quickly. >|
Just saw that. Great minds think alike. And so do ours.
|Jun-19-18|| ||patzer2: This game features an interesting exchange sacrifice by Black with 13...Rxc2!? 14. Qxc2 Bxe4 = (-0.02 @ 22 ply, Stockfish 9 analysis of move 15.?).|
White's decisive mistake in defending against it was 25. Nxg5?, allowing the decisive discovered attack 25...Bxb3 -+ (-4.92 @ 25 ply, Stockfish 9 analysis of move 25...?).
Instead, 25. Qf1 Ne4 ⩱ (-0.55 @ 19 ply, Stockfish 9 analysis of move 25.?) would have given Black a better fighting chance.
Earlier, the computer indicates White can improve on 22. Ra2 = with 22. Rc3 ⩲ (+0.52 @ 20 ply, Stockfish 9 analysis of move 22.?).
P.S.: In the puzzle position (29...?), I was initially looking for a back rank mate since it was a Tuesday and puzzles early in the week often feature a mating combination.
However, failing to find a quick mate, I settled on the simple deflection (a.k.a removing the guard) tactic 29...f5! 30. Rh4 Bxg5 31. Rxh5 Bxd2 -+ (-7.82 @ 23 ply, Stockfish 9
analysis of move 32.?) to trade one Black piece for two White pieces (i.e. go a piece up).

|Jun-19-18|| ||lost in space: Took me a while to find 29...f5. I was locking first to backrank-motives but without luck/success ....|

And it was only June 18th.....I had already forgotten that. Same thing again today.
|Aug-10-18|| ||yadasampati: <OhioChessFan> It was June 19th, which was a Tuesday. I said it before: why does CG repeat puzzles from the very recent past, and why are they not consistent in the weekday?|
|Aug-10-18|| ||OhioChessFan: <yada> the website owner/webmaster died recently. There are a number of resulting problems with the daily operations. The repetition of puzzles is one symptom. Hopefully this will get cleared up soon.|
|Aug-10-18|| ||leRevenant: Also, <chrisowen>'s literary style has changed noticeably. Is there some subtle connection?|
|Aug-10-18|| ||ChessHigherCat: I remembered this one but it's worth a second look. That said, anybody have an idea for a Friday puzzle?|
|Aug-10-18|| ||Jimfromprovidence: I don't know if this is a Friday level puzzle but it's real good. Move 29, white to play and win.|

|Aug-10-18|| ||Mayankk: Thank JFP. Got the idea behind knight sac and the resulting fork possibilities. I didnít notice the subsequent second Rook sac at first glance but thatís probably okay.|
Does it make a difference as to which knight do we move first to e4?
