 | | scormus: Mh immediate thought was, it's not 30 Kxf2. But what else? Re1 perhaps? Then ,.... Nxh3+ folloe bg ... Qxg4. Yes Fish55 has it right |
|
Oct-25-18 | | et1: Fish 55 said it. Otherwise this is illogical and impossible |
|
Oct-25-18 | | goodevans: Sadly it would appear that quality control of the daily puzzle is no longer a priority for CG.com. :o( |
|
Oct-25-18 | | Walter Glattke: Always lost: A) 30.Kxf2 Qe3+ 31.Kg2 Qe2+ 32.Kg1 Re3 B) 30.f5 Nxh3+ 31.Kh2 Qe2+ 32.Ng2 Nf4 C) 30.Re1 Qf6 31.Rxe8+ Rxe8 32.Ng2 Nxh3+ searched to win move for white, but had to look to the solution then. |
|
Oct-25-18 | | Mushroom: This is disappointing.
I agree with what others are saying about quality control. There have been some sparks of hope recently as the new games section seems to be covering current tournaments for almost the first time since Daniel died. But the daily problem is important. My guess is that it's the first thing most people look at. Getting it right and not repeatng puzzles should be a real priority if the site is to continue. I - and I am sure many others - understand the difficulties and are willing to give CG time to get itself sorted - but these are basic things from the user perspective! |

Oct-25-18 | | Andrew Chapman: I missed the force of Re3, and thought that the queen checks might run out, and that Kxf2 might be the winning move. Am mollified that the engine gives it as the least bad move. Andrew |

Oct-25-18 | | TheaN: <Mushroom: ...for almost the first time since Daniel died.> Oh wow. Thanks for actually posting that Mushroom, because as a a long term returnee to CG I was actually unaware of Daniel's passing (reading through whatever happened since end of July now). Does put these occasional slips in another light at least. <CG> or whomever is in charge of this now, if you guys need any help with quality control and/or selecting a PotD I don't mind assisting (even I've been away for a few years constructively I've always like CGs setup). |

Oct-25-18 | | Pawn Slayer: Great. Just wasted 30 mins trying to find a winning move for white, before concluding he was lost in all variations. Then I look to the answer and find.....he is lost.
What a waste of time. |
|
Oct-25-18 | | Walter Glattke: The finish: 34.Kg2 Qg3+ 35.Kf1 Rh1+
36.Ke2 Re8+ 37.Qe4 (37.Kd2 Qe3#) Rh2+ 38.Kf1 Qf2# B) 34.Kf1 Rh1+ 35.Kg2 Qh3+ 36.Kf2 Rh2+ e.g. 39.Kf1 Rxc2 winning. |
|
Oct-25-18 | | wtpy: RV, Good pickup. I agree that with 29Nh6+, white could hold game in balance. |
|
Oct-25-18 | | saturn2: Black threatens an attack on the e file with the heavy pieces and also Nxh3+ followed by Qxg4 It soon became obvious that white can at most hope for a half point.
I concluded the Nf2 is tabu for reasons seen in the game. So I looked at 30 Re1 but also this appeared hooeless: 30..Nxh3+ 31. Kf1 Qxg4 32. Ng2 Qf3# |

 | | Check It Out: On the bright side, analysis time spent trying to defend a bad position is a much more likely occurrence in a lower level game than the typical sac-sac-mate combination. Not such a waste of time. |

I see the title on the homepage has been changed to "Black to play" but unfortunately the diagram is still showing the position *after* the puzzle move. |
