  tpstar: After 17 ... f5, Black has nice control of the center and an active position, provided it is sound to give up the Pb7. Students should attempt to refute 18. Qxb7.

40. Rxb7? Rg2+ 41. Kh1 Rb2+ wins the Rb7, or 41. Kf1 Ne3+ & 42 ... Bxb7.

Good question. It's hard to see how white can avoid a mating net without the desperado exchange sacrifice Rxd5.

For example, if white tries 40. a6 then Rg2+ 41. Kf1 (41. Kh1 Ne3 42. axb7 Rxg4+ 43. Kh2 Nf1#) Ne3+ 42. Ke1 Bd3 threatening Re2#
