40. Rxb7? Rg2+ 41. Kh1 Rb2+ wins the Rb7, or 41. Kf1 Ne3+ & 42 ... Bxb7.

Good question. It's hard to see how white can avoid a mating net without the desperado exchange sacrifice Rxd5.

For example, if white tries 40. a6 then Rg2+ 41. Kf1 (41. Kh1 Ne3 42. axb7 Rxg4+ 43. Kh2 Nf1#) Ne3+ 42. Ke1 Bd3 threatening Re2#
