FSR: It's not every day that you get to mate by castling! See also Game Collection: Mate by Castling.

  Domdaniel: <FSR> Hilarious, thanks.

BTW, I have this vague idea that Botvinnik once won a game with 0-0 or 0-0-0 mate ... though I could be wrong.

There was an old book by, I think, Coles, 'The King Hunt' which had a few examples.

Domdaniel: Cozens, not Coles. Lawrence Day already mentioned it.

FSR: <Domdaniel> Thanks. I have that book. I'll have to take a look at it.

FSR: <OCF> Absolutely. Edward Lasker ending his game against Thomas with Kd2# instead of O-O-O# was an abomination. You're not going to get a chance to mate by castling many times (if any) in your life.

That is not correct.

Ed. Lasker vs G A Thomas, 1912 (kibitz #244)

<18.0-0-0# would have been wrong:

William Ewart Napier:

"‘Once I asked Harry Nelson Pillsbury whether he used any formula for castling. He said his rule was absolute and vital: <castle because you will or because you must; but not because you can>.’"

18.0-0-0# would be a case of castling simply because he could. Therefore it would have been a mistake:

18.0-0-0#?>

FSR: It occurs to me that 15.Qg5+! mated faster: 15...Kf8 16.Qf6+ Kg8 17.Qf7# or 15...Kxd6 16.c5#. But then I wouldn't have gotten my first mate by castling, so I'm not complaining.
