|Nov-14-17|| ||Phony Benoni: Got a fork on e7 if the bishop deserts his post, and 27.Rxb6 takes advantage.|
|Nov-14-17|| ||notyetagm: Damn, I solved that in like 3 seconds.|
|Nov-14-17|| ||dfcx: the bishop on d8 is overloaded with guarding the knight and the e7 check by knight.|
27.Rxb6 wins a knight.
27...Bxg6? 28.Ne7+ forks.
|Nov-14-17|| ||FSR: ♫♪♫ Basically, it's as easy as pie. ♫♪♫|
|Nov-14-17|| ||patzer2: The Knight Fork threat 27. Rxb6! Bxb6 (27...Qc5 28. Rb7 +-) 28. Ne7+ +- solves today's Tuesday puzzle.|
Black's decisive error was 23...Ra8? allowing 24. d5! +- (+3.00 @ 34 ply, Stopckfish 8).
Instead, 23...Bg7 = (0.11 @ 33 ply, Stockfish 8) holds Black's position.
|Nov-14-17|| ||Olsonist: That there's a free knight.|
|Nov-14-17|| ||saturn2: RxN and black cannot retake|
|Nov-14-17|| ||newzild: Took me longer than Sunday!|
|Nov-14-17|| ||Once: It's a PPP - piece protects piece. The black bishop is defending against two threats - Rxb6 and Ne7+. Make him choose one and then impose the other.|
|Nov-14-17|| ||leRevenant: Easyweek (at least for starters) is a pleasant change.
<newzild:> surprises me.|
|Nov-14-17|| ||morfishine: <27.Rxb6> and thats that|
|Nov-14-17|| ||thegoodanarchist: 27.? White to move would make a good Monday puzzle :)|
|Nov-14-17|| ||Squire49: Agree, rather a Monday puzzle.|
|Nov-14-17|| ||patzer2: <Once> Technically, I suppose 27. Rxb6! is an "overloading" or "overworked piece" tactic which exploits the fact that the Bishop on d8 cannot simultaneously protect the Knight on b6 and guard against a royal fork on e7.|
However, I still like your PPP for helping novices learn the tactic. Maybe we could add PPP&S -piece protects piece and square as a separate category.

|Nov-14-17|| ||FSR: kevin86 - pi isn't so easy, or at least (before computers) it didn't used to be. There were some people who spent decades of their lives calculating pi.|
|Nov-14-17|| ||TheaN: <27.?>
A lot more clear than last week (typically the two puzzles I've done now in a week are two Tuesdays). Material is even, and white overloads Bd8 with <27.Rxb6> basically ending the game on the spot. Black has no reasonable lines to consider. He either goes down a full piece or more in all variations, the main point being <27....Bxb6 28.Ne7+ 1-0>
|Nov-14-17|| ||yureesystem: IM Willemze was asleep at the board, not seeing 24.d5! shouldn't be too difficult for a IM to see this very dangerous move 24.d5! coming, we can excuse a CM failing to see it. After 25.Nxd5 Bd8?? this move is a blunder and lose a piece, much better is 25...Qxd5 26.Qxd5 Nxd5 27.Rxa8 Rxa8 28.Ra8+ Kg7 and black just lose the exchange. Even strong players succumb to simple tactics; I believe tactical study should be done everyday, I know two very strong FM before a tournament concentrate on tactics study to keep sharp in their games.|
