If you saw this position you might think that the ♖a1 and ♘b1 have not moved. In fact they have both been out and come back. |
|
Feb-16-19 | | SugarDom: I'm still waiting for naunsyame's expert analysis of this game. It would have been fantastic if SO found a way to continue the attack. I guess he's not world championship material like Tal. |
|
Jun-14-20 | | agb2002: Black is a pawn ahead.
The black queen is trapped.
The only reasonable option seems to be 25... Bc5: A) 26.Rxa1 Bxd4 27.Bxd4 (due to Bxb2+ and Bxe3+) 27... Rxc4 and Black is still a pawn up. B) 26.Qxc5 Qxb2+ 27.Kd1 Qxb1+ and Nxc5 wins.
C) 26.Qe5 Bxe3+ wins. |
|
Jun-14-20 | | Brenin: 25 ... Qxb2+ also works: 26 Qxb2 Rxb2 27 Kxb2 Bxa3+ 28 Nxa3 dxc4 29 Nxc4 and Black is still a pawn up, though perhaps in a slightly less advantageous position than in <agb2002>'s line (A). |
|
Jun-14-20 | | Brenin: The win for Black in <agb2002>'s line (C) is not entirely obvious: for example, after 27 Rxe3, if 27 ... Rxc4 then 28 Ra3 traps the Q again, and Black needs Nf2 (threatening the fork Nd3+) 29 Qe2 Qxa3 30 NxQ Rxf4 to survive, with R+B+2P for the Q. Better for Black is 27 ... Nf6, e.g. 28 Ra3 Qxb2+ 29 Qxb2 Rxb2 30 Kxb2 Nxh5 31 Bxa6 Nxf4, and Black is two pawns up. |
|
Jun-14-20 | | mel gibson: It was obvious that a lot of swapping was needed to simplify the position and not lose
the Black Queen entirely.

 | | Diocletian: A game as ugly as a mess of Clebsch Gordan coefficients. The word here is gross, not insane. White should have played 15 OOO, 17 Bd2. 23 N-b1 is not only ugly but, according to my engine, losing as well. I'm adding this game to my collection of 'most hated games.' "Chess, like love, like music has the power to make men happy" - but not today. |

Jun-14-20 | | RandomVisitor: A final, final look, after 25.Ra3. When the smoke clears black is up a pawn, but white has two underdeveloped pieces and vulnerable pawns. White must give up more material. My own choice without computer assistance was 25...Qxb2+ because I could calculate the next few moves, up to 27...Bxa3+. click for larger viewStockfish_20061313_x64_modern:

Jun-14-20 | | Jambow: At what point was Nils throwing a haymaker that landed? At what point did he see the unstoppable running back scoring a touch down on the sideline? FWIW I saw the first coupe of moves in seconds, and I'm ok with that as I doubt Stockfish saw the continuation at that point. The pacman knight munching delicious dots aka pawns brought back fond memories of thoughtless pattern recognition and quarters that had no home. Also reminded my friend being banned because drilled holes in quarters and dental floss showed a creativity and problem solving skill that was under appreciated. Sorry for dragging everyone else along as I reminisced... Interesting game Nils... |
