Breunor: This game is in Soltis' column today. He is critical of white's 15 th move, b4; he said Martinez played it to prevent e5, but black later sacrificed a knight to get it in.

Stockfish agrees. It prefers Bb5:

1) +0.32 (20 ply) 15.Bb5 Ne7 16.Nb3 a6 17.Bd3 Nc6 18.g3 e5 19.Qf2 Rhe8 20.Rad1 exd4 21.Nxd4 Nxd4 22.cxd4 Qb4 23.Rc1 g6 24.Rc3 Ng7 25.Rb3 Qa4 26.Ra3 Qb4 27.g4 Ne6

Instead the text move puts him even:

1) -0.03 (23 ply) 15...Nf4 16.Bb5 a6 17.Bxc6 Qxc6 18.b5 axb5 19.Rb1 g5 20.Rb3 h5 21.g3 Ng6 22.Qe2 Rc8 23.Qxb5 Qxb5 24.Rxb5 Rxc3 25.Rfb1 Kc8 26.Rxb7 Rc1+ 27.Kf2 Rxb1 28.Rxb1 Kc7 29.a4 Ra8

Soltis gives 16 e5 and exclamation point - but the computer here doesn't agree.

Stockfish prefers:

1) -0.74 (20 ply) 16...Rhe8 17.b5 e5 18.bxc6 exd4 19.Qh4 dxc3 20.Nb3 g5 21.Qg4 Re2 22.Rf2 Rxf2 23.Kxf2 Re8 24.g3 Re2+ 25.Kf1 Rxc2 26.gxf4 Qxc6 27.Qxg5 a6 28.Qe5+ Ka7 29.Qd4+ Qb6 30.Qxb6+ Kxb6 31.Kg1 Re2 32.Nd4 Rd2 33.Rb1+ Kc7

1) -0.32 (20 ply) 17.b5 Na5 18.Qxe5 Qxe5 19.dxe5 Rc8 20.g3 Ne2+ 21.Kf2 Rxc3 22.Kxe2 Rxc2 23.Rfc1 Rhc8 24.Rxc2 Rxc2 25.Kd3 Rb2 26.f4 Rxb5 27.f5 Nc6 28.e6 fxe6 29.fxe6 Rb6 30.Kc3 Ne7

this is one of those cases though that I think I prefer the GM to the silicon - it looks like e5 has a profound influence here. But maybe that's a retrospect bias?

Soltis says 'Also good was the endgame after 20 Qxc3 31 Q x c3 dxc3'.

Here the computer is in agreement:

1) -1.73 (22 ply) 20...Qxc3 21.Rab1 b6 22.Qxc3 dxc3 23.Rb4 g5 24.g3 Ne2+ 25.Kf2 cxd2 26.Rd1 Nc3 27.Rxd2 Nxa2 28.Rg4 Re5 29.f4 gxf4 30.Rxf4 Re7 31.Bxh7 Nc3 32.Rf3 Rc7 33.h4 b5 34.Bc2 Re8 35.Rf6

2) -0.70 (21 ply) 20...Qh6 21.cxd4 Qg5 22.Rf2 Nh3+ 23.Kf1 Nxf2 24.Rb1 b6 25.Kxf2 Qh4+ 26.Kf1 Qxh2 27.Nb3 Rd6 28.Nc5 Ka8 29.Qb5 Re7 30.Nd3 Qh1+ 31.Kf2 Qh4+ 32.Kf1 Qxd4 33.Qb4 Qxb4 34.Nxb4 Kb7 35.Bxh7 g6 36.Nd3 Ka6

Its all over after 23 .. Re2:

1) -3.89 (24 ply) 24.Rf2 Rxf2 25.Kxf2 Qh4+ 26.Kf1 Re8 27.Ne4 Qxh2 28.Qd4 Qxg2+ 29.Ke1 Re6 30.Rc1 Qg5 31.Rc2 dxe4 32.fxe4 Rh6 33.Bf3 Qg3+ 34.Rf2 Qg1+ 35.Kd2 Qg5 36.Kd1 Rc6 37.Rc2 Ne6 38.Qf2 Rxc2 39.Kxc2 Qa5 40.Kb1 Qb5+ 41.Ka1 Qd3 42.Bg4 Nc5 43.Qf4+ Ka8
