Ivanchuk's wee joke. 18.Qh5+ (OOPS! you can run away from the Queen checks with 18...Kg7? 19.Bh6+) I bet I can find a game where that has worked.
Given the choice of two moves never underestimate any chess player's proven ability to find the wrong one. It's a gift.
The square g7 is like a wet paint sign to a human. You just have to touch it to see if it is wet.
|May-15-19|| ||agb2002: White is a knight down.
Black threatens Qe8.
The position of the black king suggests 16.Ng5 fxg5 (16... Re8 17.Qh7+ Kf8 18.Qh8+ Ke7 19.Qxg7#) 17.Be4:
A) 17... Rf7 18.Qh7+ Kf8 19.Qh8+ Ke7 20.Bxg5+ Nf6 21.Qh4 recovers material and keeps the attack.
B) 17... Rf5 18.g4 Nc6 19.gxf5 exf5 20.Bxg5 Qd7, unclear.
C) 17... Re8 18.Bxg5 Qd7 19.Bg6 and mate soon.
D) 17... Nf6 18.exf6 with the double threat Bh7+ (and mate soon) and Bxa8 looks winning for White.
Another option is 16.Nxf6+:
A) 16... gxf6 17.Qg6+ Kh8 18.Qh6+, perpetual.
B) 16... Nxf6 17.exf6 and White recovers material.
C) 16... Rxf6 17.exf6 Nxf6 (17... Qxf6 18.Bxd5 exd5 19.Qxd5+ and 20.Qxa8 wins decisive material) 18.Qh4 recovers material and keeps the attack.
Yet another option is 16.exf6 but after 16... Qe8 the attack seems to fade out.
I don't know. I think I'd play 16.Ng5.
|May-15-19|| ||devere: The best practical chance seems to be 16.exf6. Black can equalize with 16...Qe8! but can also go wrong in several different ways.|

Exactly, which makes it a *realistic* chess puzzle, as they happen in the real world, where no one whispers in your ear "hey, you have a winning move!" (Or they shouldn't, anyway!) Well done, <CG>!
|May-15-19|| ||Damenlaeuferbauer: Today's game was a real disappointment for me: I was looking out a very long time for a win for white, but couldn't find anyone, because ... there wasn't anyone. 16.Nxf6+ and a perpetual check were quite obvious and too easy. In the future, chessgames.com should announce to the users/readers, if white or black is playing for a win or a draw using "16.? =", "16.? +-", or "16.-,? -+"! Thanks for your help, chessgames.com!|

<Damenlaeuferbauer> There are plenty of chess puzzle books and other websites where you're spoon-fed what you should be looking for. As a longtime visitor to CG.com I'd prefer things to stay exactly as they are, thank you.

Well, White is down a knight after the 13 Nxh7 attack. If just three moves later, you're looking for a perpetual check, something has gone horribly wrong.
In fact, Komodo finds that 16 exf6 is a continuation that leaves White with a bit of an edge (an computer eval of around .40):

At just move 16, there doesn't seem a reason to have to settle for the perpetual.
Kind of an odd Wednesday puzzle - since the "solution" is a perpetual check, and the perpetual check isn't White's best move, and there is no line which leads to a win.
|May-15-19|| ||DrGridlock: <goodevans: The fact that you have to work out that you should be aiming for a draw is what raises this to a midweek puzzle.>|
The fact that White has better options than aiming for a draw is what makes this an odd midweek puzzle.

When I write it two times, the whole thing changes, the block on the right becomes much larger than the one on the left and more disruption. I am doing this in WordPress Bridge with no previous experience. It's not spam, it's despair.|
