mike1: hmmm.Once in a while Magnus is really
playing it too much in the dynamic way.
pawn structures do count (once in a while).

Count Wedgemore: After 12 moves, White is already much better.

21...0-0 was a strange decision. Magnus had to get his rook to the f-file, but he could have done so with 21...Rf8. Instead, by castling short, Black puts his king in a rough spot, exposed to harassment when White's h-pawn starts pushing forward. This eventually led to Black's king being forced onto the f-file which led to his bishop being pinned - and lost. So 21...0-0 looks to have been a strategical mistake. I do think that 21...Rf8, keeping the king on e8 for the time being, would have been a better choice. A disappointing game by the World Champion.

Aug-12-19  Pedro Fernandez: Very interesting opinions by <mike 1> and our dear friend <Wedgemore>. As implicitly <M1> did mention, you don't be fooled about Carlsen.
Aug-12-19  Ulhumbrus: GM Ashley has indicated ( amongst many other things) that 15...Ne6? is a mistake which cuts off the flight squares for Black's queen's bishop so that after 16 Qe4 Qd5 17 Nxe5! Qxe4 18 dxe4 fxe5 19 f3 traps Black's queen's bishop

my head is spinning!

The "fun line" is:

27 ... Na3+
28 Bxa3 Bxa3
29 h7+ Kh8
30 Nd5

Fabiano Caruana - Magnus Carlsen

and now white threatens mate with the knight on g6 - which black avoids by moving his pawn to g6. Now after:

30 ... g6
31 Nxg6 Kg7
32 h8Q+ Rxh8
33 Nxh8 c3

Does White have enough resources to stop the c-pawn? Answer: Yes, he does.

Aug-12-19  csmath: 9. ...d6 is just plain garbage.
I always felt Rossolimo is the best way to deal with Svesnikov but this is probably the worst way to play against Rossolimo. I think most of players would play g6 rather than e6-Ne7-Ng6. Yes, there would likely be a bayonet attack with h4-h5 but I think it is better to deal with that than with such a shattered pawn structure.
Aug-12-19  Hokey pokey: 15...Ne6,sometimes the center can be too occupied.

  patzer2: <csmath: 9. ...d6 is just plain garbage.> White certainly has the better pawn structure after 10. exd6 ⩲.

Instead, 9...fxe5 = to ⩱ (-0.38 @ 24 ply, Stockfish 10) appears to improve Black's chances.

  patzer2: White's surprise winning shot appears to be 17. Nxe5!! ± to +- (+1.76 @ 42 ply, Stockfish 10). If 17...fxe5, then 18. f6! +- (+1.69 @ 34 ply, Stockfish 10) looks like it's winning.
