Comment on this game: I see the Russians are drawing with each other again.

Mar-18-20  RadioBoy: And why is that a bad thing? Would you rather see one of them throwing games to the other? It's not like this is Zurich 1953 were they had to play 28 games and conserve their energy after all. Poor Keres. All he had to do was win one of his games against Smyslov to finish in a tie for first place. I wonder what tiebreaker was in effect.

er..it was a minor joke recalling Curacao Candidates (1962) when none of the games between, Petrosian, Geller and Keres were as hard fought as this one.

Never mind.

Regarding Keres and Smyslov - K.P. has some good input on that infamous game where Keres could have tied with Smyslov.

Keres vs Smyslov, 1953 (kibitz #35)

Tie Break? Phony Benoni used the Sonnenborg-Berger system for the crosstable. (need some boffin to pretend Keres and Smyslov tied on 17 pts with a win each v each other to see who would have won.)

Zurich Candidates (1953) (kibitz #2)

Am still self isolating on this thread... how is thread rest of the candidates going and who won the Grand National?

Phony Benoni: <Sally Simpson> Had Keres defeated Smyslov once to tie him at 17 points, Syslov would have been ahead on Sonnenborn-Berg tiebreak. However, there surely would have been a match to settle the issue, as happened to Bronstein and Boleslavky in 1950.

Interesting, a Smyslov - Keres tie would have elevated Geller above Najdorf in the itbreaks, as Najdorf would have received less credit for his two draws with Smyslov.

Thanks Professor,

I'll dig out my 'Chess Struggle' and see if it mentions anything about a tie but suspect a match as well. Hard to call, Keres and Smyslov finished 9 - 9 with 22 draws.
