Mar-20-20 | | DrProf: This is Russian, not French opening |
|
Mar-20-20 | | amateur05: Begins as a Petrov but then transforms into French exchange after 5. d3 Nf6 6. d4 d5. Grischuk played well and had a big advantage until he got into time trouble. He probably missed 34. ... Ne4+! which took the pressure off the isolani on d5. |

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nf3 Nf6 with same position as move 6 in this game. French became Russian, or Russian became French. I'd go to a bistro but the government has closed all bistros. Cauchemar! |

 | | beatgiant: Oops, I meant 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 exd5 4. Nf3 Nf6, of course. As for the game, I think White was better, but the advantage was not huge. My suggested improvement is to play in the e-file aiming to trade off a pair of rooks, for example <31. Re1+>. If then 31. Re1+ Re6 32. Rxe6+ Kxe6 and only now 33. h5, I think Black's counterplay is reduced compared to the game. But even then I don't necessarily see White winning. |

Mar-20-20 | | LameJokes: 34.g5 Ne4 35.fe4. After White bishop saves itself and 36...e3 forks king and rook. Therefore, 34.g5 was a blunder. In the post-game conference, Grischuk said he had seen this combination few moves earlier. Only to overlook the same this time around. 34.Bb1 retains his advantage. |

Mar-20-20 | | pdvossen: Alexander could have won every match with better time management. I love his gutsy play and such, its just tough to watch him struggle with time. He could be a beast in a match with Magnus. |

Yes, but any White advantage looks minimal after 34. Bb1 <Re5>. If we want to look for real winning chances, I think we need to go back a few moves. I have the impression that the h5-hxg6 was a bit rushed, and White should improve the position of his pieces first. For example <31. Kg3> seems useful, sidestepping the tactic that occurred in the game. |

 | | beatgiant: For purposes of discussion, I'll post a sample line. 31. Kg3 Kf7 32. Rh2 Re8, and only now 33. h5 Re5 34. hxg6+ hxg6 35. Rh8 click for larger viewWhite has managed to acquire the h-file and the 8th rank and has some advantage, though probably not enough to win yet. |

Mar-20-20 | | LameJokes: <beatgiant: > I was quoting what Grisichuk said in post-game interview. 34.Bb1 is suggested on chess.com. I agree, with the best reply his advantage would be greater on 31st turn. I also agree, in both cases, black should probably draw. I mean, white had some practical chances. In case, black made any error. |
