Apr-23-21  0ZeR0: Why does MVL look to trade down into a bishop endgame he knows is lost? Surely by keeping his rooks he could have persisted longer. I know his position isn't good, but especially considering what's at stake and the current leaderboard it's rather unfortunate to say the least.
Apr-23-21  Ulhumbrus: The computer evaluations suggest that 17...Bg7? is a serious mistake because it does not answer the threat of the pawn attack g4 and g5 followed by f5 and f6 and then a sacrifice on h5 and that it is better to distract White from the pawn attack g4 by 17...Qf2! tying the g pawn to the defence of the f4 pawn. Then on 18 g4 Bxf4 19 Nxf4 Qxd2 exchanges queens and removes the danger of a mating attack.

An Englishman: Good Evening: 9.Nge2 does not appear in the CG database for this strange variation, but it hardly looks like an earth-shattering improvement over the usual 9.g3. This 3.d4 line seems to have no real purpose but to lure Black into a false sense of overconfidence, but as usual, probably wrong.
Apr-25-21  farticchio: =0.00 (29 ply) 33...Rh4 34.Rxh4 Qd1+ 35.Qxd1 Rxd1+ 36.Ka2 Rd2 37.Kb1 Rd1+ Stockfish
May-05-21  Atking: <17...Qf2! tying the g pawn to the defence of the f4 pawn. Then on 18 g4 Bxf4 19 Nxf4 Qxd2 exchanges queens and removes the danger of a mating attack.> Yes <Ulhumbrus> 17...Qf2! is impressive. 18.Rhd1 exf 19.g4 f3!! 20.QxB fxN 21.Nxe2 Rxc2! 22.Rh2 RxB+! 23.KxB Qf6+ 24.Ka3! Nc2+ forces the perpetual. Not an easy combination but MVL might found it at the board at his best. I was surprised he finished first at the end of the first half part without specific preparation and then, well prepared for the second one, he couldn't manage it getting difficult position from the opening right from the first round.
May-05-21  Atking: <farticchio: =0.00 (29 ply) 33...Rh4 34.Rxh4 Qd1+ 35.Qxd1 Rxd1+ 36.Ka2 Rd2 37.Kb1 Rd1+> Needless to be stockfish to see this line I suppose MVL wanted to make matter complex to win the game. It proves to be fatal.
May-09-21  farticchio: "to a half point Martino lost Asello"

This variation is an innovation of Carlsens. Suits his style well.
