Jul-25-22  jrredfield: I also was lured at first by the rook sac, so common on Monday's but didn't see a winning continuation. Then I noticed the Knight and saw the check of the king which White had to answer and couldn't prevent the mate. But unlike some others (i.e. <mel gibson> this took me well over 2 seconds.
Jul-25-22  agb2002: Black has a bishop, a knight and a pawn for a rook and the bishop pair.

The convergence of the queen queen and rook on h2 suggests 33... Nf3+ (33... Rxh2 34.Ne4) and 34... Qxh2#.

An Englishman: Good Evening: The big question--how on earth did such a position arise in the first place?! Whilst playing the entire game, had to remind myself that even in the 1950s, Black had not figured out all of the nuances of the KID, and Paoli mishandled the game badly. If White had ignored the trap and shunned 32.d6, Black would have suffered a piece deficit for the rest of the game (that Bg7 is *not* a piece).

  Teyss: <ChessHigherCat>’s line after 33…Rxh2? 34.Kxh2?? leads to a pretty mate pattern: 37.Qxe5 Nxe5#

Alas as pointed out White is not forced to take the R.

<ChessHigherCat: Does "moral victories don't count" mean that only immoral victories count?> There are a few mathematicians on this site who will tell you "A => Not B" does not imply "Not A => B". That's only a logical point of view because your question raises philosophical issues that are very complex considering humans are not logical (which does not mean animals are).

Jul-25-22  Brenin: <An Englishman>: I don't see anything wrong with 32 d6, it was the greedy follow-up 33 Bxa8 which proved fatal, If White had used the P sac to improve the placing of his pieces, with Bg3, Rbd1, Bd5 and Ng4, he would have retained the advantage. As you noted, he was effectively a piece ahead.
Jul-25-22  TheaN: <33....Nf3+> allows White to take on f3 with three different pieces, but because neither of them is a knight and moving the king doesn't help either, all answers will follow <with 34....Qxh2#>.
Jul-25-22  cade: Looked at the puzzle and assumed White to move! A fairly interesting angle too although nothing quite as decisive as Blacks move.

Honza Cervenka: I wonder that Rabar was not alerted by 32...Qxd6 leaving whole Rook en prise.

takebackok: No think Monday, check with the knight, yea it's mate
Jul-25-22  QueenMe: I also went with the rook sac first.

FSR: A classic example of the adage "If you see a good move, wait - and look for a better one." Like others, I went for the inferior ...Rxh2.
Jul-25-22  johnnydeep: Another easy Monday to start the week off right.

Open Defence: < Honza Cervenka: I wonder that Rabar was not alerted by 32...Qxd6 leaving whole Rook en prise.> Maybe 33.Bg3 instead of Bxa8

e.g. 33. Bg3 Rd8 34. Bd5

Jul-25-22  Messiah: Way too easy, but a Monday is a Monday.
Jul-25-22  YoungEd: We're almost all GMs on Monday! (Well, most Mondays...)

Diocletian: I got this instantly. I got them all last week too, never more than a few seconds. I have been beating Stockfish consistently, mostly in three-minute games but also in traditional 40 moves/2.5 hours.

steinitzfan: I actually flubbed this ... I went for Rxh2.

However, I would have done fine if I hadn't broken my cardinal to count material before attempting a solve - even on a Monday. White can effectively decline the capture of the rook.

gawain: Saw the winning knight check right away. Hooray for me! Even on a Monday.
Jul-25-22  King.Arthur.Brazil: The King (you know...) almost followed others with 33.♖xh2. However, I wondered to my self: "Hey, do I need to sacrifice more material?". So, I gave my self more seconds and see the obvious: 33.♘f3+ gives immediate mate. A good lesson any way: "why are chess players (like me) always tempted to complicate, what is simple"? Let's waste more a few seconds thinking, before chose the moves... Even more in Mondays? (lgs).

eternaloptimist: <steinitzfan> Wow u flubbed this. I solved it really quickly b/c it’s a pretty common tactic.
