Nov-03-08  biglo: His FIDE card says he was born 1918
Nov-10-08  FHBradley: He was, indeed, born 1918 (December 4th, Helsinki, according to all reliable sources that I have checked)
Dec-04-08  fich: Oh my! My late grandfather was born on December 4, 1918 also.

Dec-04-08  brankat: IM Kaarle-Sakari Ojanen was Finish Champion 13 times! last time at the age of 65. If he is still alive, Mr.Ojanen would be 90 today.

Happy Birthday Sir!

Dec-04-08  brankat: <fich> I see You are relatively new around here, still learning the ropes :-)

About 6 inches down from the top of the screen there is a short (2 lines) biography of the player :-)

It is so on every players' page, with some exceptions where there is no Bios.

Dec-04-08  FHBradley: Known as "Charles XIII" for winning the Finnish Championship for thirteen times, Ojanen's most influential game was a win against Paul Keres, May 1960, a game whose ideas Jonathan Penrose made use of when he defeated Tal in a famous game at the Chess Olympiad, Leipzig 1960. Penrose's game (though, possibly, not Ojanen's) was recently discussed by Dennis Monokroussos: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...
Ojanen's original game:
Ojanen vs Keres, 1960
Dec-04-08  brankat: Hmmm, Mr<fich> has deleted his question about the Bio-data, and I'm too late to delete my response :-)

<FHBradley> Yes, a nice win against P.Keres.

Jan-09-09  Sbetsho: It seems that Kaarle has left this world http://www.shakki.net/blog/?p=276#c... :(
Jan-13-09  FHBradley: That's right. The morning newspaper tells that Kaarle Ojanen died in Helsinki, on January 9th.

Dec-27-12  leka: Kaarle Ojanen died at age 90 years old.But his the famous win over Paul Keres in 1960 Ojanen killed the Benoni defence.Ojanen layed bishop d3knight e2 pawn ff!! The brtish have robbed this line from the great Ojanen. They called it a Perose Tal line.It is not right.Spassky played WC match against Fischer in the Benoni queen c2? and lost.Korchnoi played against Kasparov g2 bishop g2? and lost. These pro players Spassky and Korchnoi studied chess 15 times more time than Ojanen.Ojanen should have a chance to play pro chess.Ojanen got a draw in chess olympiad in 1952 against Vassily Smyslov it was in Finland
Dec-04-18  sudoplatov: Keres did win 6 of the next 7 games between these two. Keres +7 -1 = 3 vs Ojanen. Ojanen's win here is very good though; especially introducing, for this opening, the idea of the tandem breaks of e5 and f5.
