KURT MEIER
(born Jun-09-1947, died Aug-14-2014, 67 years old) Switzerland (federation/nationality Seychelles)

[what is this?]
Candidate Master since 2009. He was Seychelles number two player after Peter Meier and his wife Flora also attended the Chess Olympiad (Women) (2014) (FIDE cards: 9800301, 9800310; with no Olympiad games played in 2014) as their reserve player.

The game K Meier vs A Niyibizi, 2014 at the Chess Olympiad (2014) match between Rwanda and Seychelles had an unusual ending for both teams. Another player might have been in contention for a Candidate master title as a result of the team standings in the round, but team captain Maxence Murara of Rwanda "chose to sacrifice two games as loses in a gesture of goodwill to Seychelles, a decision which did not go down well with his teammates (2)." Links to G Kabera vs P Meier, 2014 (1st board), M Murara vs Ragul Pillay, 2014 (3rd board) and B Hoareau vs A Ruzigura, 2014 (4th board) were the other games of that final round.

Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-19-08  whiteshark: SEYCHELLES is being represented at the 38th Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany, by a 14-member delegation.

The chesslers on the team are Arnold Mein, Dericka Figaro, Andry Accouche, Lalatianna Accouche, Douglas Accouche, Marianna Eulentin, Keith Vital, <Kurt Meier, <Peter Meier, <Flora Meier>>> and Shirley Annette.

They are accompanied by Seychelles Chess Federation chairperson and coach Benjamin Hoareau, Rachelle Hoareau and Bernadette Mein.

The tournament comprises 11 rounds (per day) and is played on a team basis of four players on one team (2x team total).

Two special rules are being implemented in Dresden. The first says that no draws will be allowed before move 30 of a game. And the second, more radical, says that all players must be present at their boards at the starting time of each round. Anyone who is not there when the clocks are started will be immediately disqualified.

Organised by the City of Dresden, the German Chess Federation (DSB) and FIDE (International Chess Federation), the tournament started yesterday and will end on Tuesday November 25.

During the Olympiad, there will also be the 79th FIDE Congress from November 17-25.

More than 2,000 chesslers are competing at the Chess Olympiad. With 152 registered nations, Dresden surpasses by seven the total of 145 countries represented at the previous Olympiad in Turin, Italy in 2006.

There are a total of 275 teams, 156 in the main tournament, including a second German team, teams for the deaf, blind, and correspondence chess players. In the women's section, there are 119 teams.

The Chess Olympiad is the sporting event with the second largest number of competing nations worldwide after the Summer Olympic Games.

Aug-15-14  zanzibar: <“We have had the Red Cross inside the playing hall, and they immediately began resuscitation efforts,” Morgan Lillegård of the Chess Olympiad’s organizing committee told reporters “The ambulance team continued the emergency efforts.”

Most of the matches were over when the player collapsed while others interrupted their play. State broadcaster NRK reported that many people in the hall began to cry and several of the man’s teammates witnessed his collapse. The organizers said they were setting up a crisis team that would be available for anyone feeling a need for support.>
