GM Ivan Popov won the 2007 U-18 World Youth Chess Championship and the Vladimir Open 2007 with 8/10, and was runner up in the World Junior Championship (2007). His strong result in the European Individual Championship (2013) (7.5/11) qualified him to play in the World Cup (2013) from which he was eliminated when he lost in the first round match to Austrian #1, GM Markus Ragger.

Popov's 7.5/11 at the European Individual Championship (2015) qualified him to play at the World Cup (2015) where he was eliminated in the first round by US GM Samuel Shankland.
