Oct-28-06  Bufon: <suentespo147> so, do you consider 5 loses and one draw what???

A miserable performance...

suenteus po 147: <Bufon> It depends on your point of view, I guess. To me, Topalov had a much more miserable performance than Sokolov did. After all, Sokolov is the lowest rated guy there. How well do you expect him to do? Topalov, on the other hand, is the highest rated player there! Yet he came in third, with three losses and a draw to the lowest rated player. That's pretty miserable.

chancho: <suenteus po 147> Exactly right.
Oct-28-06  sitzkrieg: Probably clear enough, but Essent and Corus are companies that sponsor chess tournaments in Hoogeveen and Wijk aan zee, respectiveley.
Jan-08-07  Dr.Lecter: I can't believe that Sokolov placed last in two consecutive Corus tournaments. What is it between him and Corus?

Jul-06-07  arunjangity: gadzeeks what a horrible picture. he looks like he's saying f.u. to the whole world.
Aug-06-07  pawnofdoom: His mouth's not even open. Looks more like he's sleeping. Chessgames should replace that pic

Oct-06-07  Red October: it seems suicidal playing the Nimzo Indian Defence against him
Jun-20-08  MichAdams: When he became a GM at the age of 19 in 1987, he was, at the time, the 4th youngest to attain the title, behind Fischer, Kasparov and Short.

percyblakeney: Essent starts next week but seems weaker than usual. Polgar and Mamedyarov have played the last years and also Topalov in 2006. Then Sokolov ended up with 0.5/6 but this year he is huge rating favourite as the only 2600+ participant. Apart from Sokolov it is Adly, Smeets and Sebag that are playing this year:

Karpova: Ivan Sokolov completely dominated Essent 2008 and won:

1. I.Sokolov 5.0/6 (+4 -0 =2)
2. Smeets 2.5/6 (+2 -3 =1)
3. Adly 2.5/6 (+1 -2 =3)
4. Sebag 2.0/6 (+1 -3 =2)

Phoenix: <has anyone had a chance to read Sokolov's new book? good/bad?>

It is DYNAMITE. I am devouring it currently, and recommend it heartily.

Jun-04-09  Troller: Sokolov beat Hillarp-Persson with black in the first round of Sigeman 2009. It had some nice fireworks at the end:

http://www.sigeman-chess.com/live/i...

Hillarp-Persson has risen 120 elo or so during the last year or maybe even six months, but he is very unstable.

Jun-13-09  wordfunph: Happy 41st Birthday GM Ivan Sokolov... we were born on the same year 1968..
Jun-13-09  WhiteRook48: Happy birthday Mr. Sokolov!!
Jul-27-09  Johnny O: In January 2004 he was #16 in the world with a 2706 FIDE rating. How much respect do I have for GM Ivan Sokolov's contributions to opening theory? His black games against 1. d4 are the only ones I even look at. I'm not kidding.
Sep-02-09  Johnny O: "Red October: it seems suicidal playing the Nimzo Indian Defence against him"

Agreed. In his last 23 games he has only 4 losses against Ponomariov, Aronian, Judit Polgar, and Naiditsch.
