BENT LARSEN
(born Mar-04-1935, died Sep-09-2010) Denmark

[what is this?]
Jĝrgen Bent Larsen was born March 4, 1935 in Denmark. At age 19 he became an International Master, and two years later he achieved the grandmaster title. He was Danish Champion on 6 occasions and won the Interzonal 3 times. In 1964, he won the Amsterdam Interzonal and advanced to the semifinals of the Candidates, where he lost to Mikhail Tal. He again won the Interzonal in 1967, and again made the Candidates' semifinals before losing to Boris Spassky, who went on to win the World Championship the next year.

For his tournament achievements during 1967, including first-place finishes in Palma and Havana, he later became the recipient of the inaugural Chess Oscar award. When the USSR vs. Rest of the World (1970) tournament took place, he played top board for the World, scoring 1.5-1.5 against World Champion Spassky.

In 1971 he made the Candidates' semifinals for the third consecutive time. His opponent was his constant rival, Robert James Fischer. The Fischer-Larsen Candidates Match (1971) met in Denver and, to the astonishment of most of the chess world, Larsen was shut out, losing all six match games. After that defeat his position in the world rankings gradually slipped back, although he did achieve another Interzonal victory at Biel in 1976 and a Candidates appearance at Rotterdam where he was defeated by Lajos Portisch. Larsen lived his last years in Buenos Aires with his wife, Laura, until his death in 2010. Today the opening move 1. b3, which he occasionally played, is called the Nimzo-Larsen attack after him.

Sep-10-10  Riverbeast: R.I.P. Larsen

Not too long ago, he played what was probably his last tournament

He played some insanely offbeat chess, even by his standards, and I think he lost all his games

An interesting swan song from a very interesting chessplayer....And I have no doubt he played those games with some humor

Go find Fischer while you're out there, Bent...The two of you can go over old times.....

Sep-10-10  Uncanny: <Larsen defeated the seven World Champions who held the title from 1948 to 1985. He won games against Mikhail Botvinnik, Vasily Smyslov, Mikhail Tal, Tigran Petrosian, Boris Spassky, Bobby Fischer, and Anatoly Karpov>

Amazing

Sep-10-10  Eastfrisian: R.I.P

He was one of my first heroes, when I was starting to play chess (together with Dr. Robert Hübner and Lajos Portisch).

Harvestman: Shocked. My chess hero has gone. A great man, and a wonderful chess player.
Sep-10-10  GalileoPiccolino: Another chess great is gone...rest in peace.
Hopefully,.....
Estate and royalties are secured. No degrading exhumation, for bogus and impostor claimants taking advantage of.. what was left behind as legacy to the game, and reputation.
Sep-10-10  percyblakeney: Not just a great player but one of the greatest chess authors.
Sep-10-10  Skakalec: RIP.
Played him 4 times! (simultan of corse)
At one ocasion after BentLarsen refused to play against a russian IM, who was following a bunch of russian children visiting Denmark, I took over IM's board playing 2 games at once. Bent was 60 at the time.
Result? 2:0 !
Overall 3:1 in my favour!

zarg: Bent Larsen was my first chess hero.

His book was my first no-beginner chess material, and it greatly influenced me as a teen, both as player and in developing an interest for the game.

It had lots of wonderful stuff, and after studying for a couple of hours, I usually had so much to think about, so many ideas to process, that a break was needed. I've rarely spent so much time on a single book, about 300 pages in all.

Against stronger players, I started to win games and even won my first chess tournament. Your book was my secret weapon.

Thanks a lot, RIP.

Sep-10-10  Augalv: Rest in Piece.
Sep-10-10  anandrulez: RIP Bent Larsen
Sep-10-10  hellopolgar: RIP.

if you wondered why this man performed so badly in this tournament, Magistral Internacional Ruibal (2008)

well now you have the answer, he probably wasn't in very good shape.

RIP, you will be missed!

Sep-10-10  edbermac: I assume we'll see the next Game of the Day featuring Mr Larsen. What game of his would you pick?

His 2 wins against Petrosian in the 1966 Piatigorsky Cup were pretty impressive for a start.

parisattack: Very sad news. A terrific fighter and fearless. Certainly no modern GM added more life to classical chess than Bent Larsen with his rehabilitation of so many openings and variations thought to be unplayable at the top level of the game.

Bent Larsen was one such person. RIP.
