Nov-16-08  Jim Bartle: Sure you can: "Van Wely, he sure isn't any Korchnoi, Reshevsky, Smyslov, or a Kasparov."

(Joke stolen from former NBA sub Scott Hastings, who said people often mentioned his name in the same breath as Larry Bird.)

Nov-17-08  Billy Vaughan: And then he goes and draws Aronian. How can you predict his games, anyways? Roll a die?
Nov-17-08  Bobsterman3000: <Jim Bartle> LOL. I remember Scott Hastings.

You are a walking, talking compendium of "Bartlett's familiar quotations" with your wide and timely knowledge of entertaining quotes from the past :-)

Dec-01-08  Billy Vaughan: Van Wely wins a tournament! Remco Heite Tournament (2008)

Don't know how the tiebreaks work, but I say he wins! Next we'll be seeing Van Wely win Corus A :)

Eyal: <Don't know how the tiebreaks work>

The first tiebreak was head-to-head result, so actually Macieja won the tournament...

Dec-01-08  Billy Vaughan: OK, Van Wely almost wins a tournament :(
Dec-01-08  Billy Vaughan: In any case, he probably didn't need a second horse.

Let's make this his pic!

Dec-01-08  NakoSonorense: How do you pronounce Loek in Dutch?

Like "look," or like "leek," or like "like"?

Stonehenge: Like "look". And it's Loek van Wely not Loek Van Wely :)
Dec-01-08  me to play: <The first tiebreak was head-to-head result, so actually Macieja won the tournament...> The BCS in college football could learn something here. :)
Dec-05-08  dumbgai: A full list of players competing in Corus 2009 is now available:

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

Looks like the A group will fall from a Cat. 20 to 19. Van Wely is there as usual, accompanied this time by Stellwagen and Smeets to represent the home country.

Dec-08-08  Billy Vaughan: Loeks like they're ready to pass the torch to the next crop of Dutch players in Corus A.

I'd like to see Loek do well here, if only because he's had such a crappy year and it would be good to see him back in form.

Dec-10-08  Billy Vaughan: I had a dream last night that van Wely lost Corus A. Let's hope it doesn't come true!
Dec-11-08  dumbgai: <Billy Vaughan> Like that hasn't happened before? :)
Dec-11-08  Billy Vaughan: Well, let's loek at the bright side of things. He only tied for last this year!
Jan-18-09  Billy Vaughan: His head's still above water. In fact, he almost won his first game.
Jan-18-09  Billy Vaughan: He lost to Moro :(.

Come on Loek, you can still do it!

Jan-19-09  Billy Vaughan: http://www.fredlucas.eu/frame.php?i...

I don't understand how a chess player who loeks like this ever loses.

kellmano: Man, that site has some great photos.
Jan-19-09  Billy Vaughan: I posted the wrong photo, so my comment doesn't make sense.

This is what I meant: http://www.fredlucas.eu/frame.php?i...

A lot of great Loek shots.

Jan-22-09  rangek: how can you not love a guy who loses and wins spectacularly half the time!
Jan-22-09  Billy Vaughan: And he beats Radjabov again. He seems to have this kid's number.

Back to even at Corus. See, van Wely isn't that bad :)

Jan-22-09  dumbgai: Yeah he might just shock the world by actually finishing with a plus score. Yeah I know he's already done it before but that was back when he was still rated 2700.

dx9293: I love that Van Wely isn't afraid of anyone. No fooling around, straight down the mainlines no matter who he faces!
Jan-24-09  Billy Vaughan: Almost beat Carlsen today, still keeping his head above water.
