Goganov won his 1st GM norm at the 81st St.Petersburg Championship held in 2008 (the NWAPA Rector Cup). His next GM norm came at the World Chess Tour - 5th GM Tounament held in Moscow during Dec 2009-Jan 2010. The 3rd GM norm came at the European Individual Championships (2013). He came 3rd at the 66th Russian Championship Higher League (2013), where his =3rd placement (4th on tiebreak) qualified him to play in the 2013 Russian Superfinal. He was =2nd in the first stage of the Chepukaitis Memorial Blitz in August 2013, but won the 2nd and final stage to win the tournament.

He competed in the World Cup (2015) and met Peter Leko in the first round, losing by 0.5-1.5 in the first round to exit the event.
