In 2011, International Master (2017) Michael Kleinman (FIDE Master in 2011) tied for 3rd-5th in the Canadian Youth U-18 chess championship with 4/7, won the 2011 Ontario junior and tied for 1st-3rd with Roman Sapozhnikov and Nikolay Noritsyn at the Guelph Fall ProAm (with a win and a loss against his aforementioned opponents, respectively). He was the Ontario 2010 Closed champion, went to the 2010 WYCC and at the World Junior Championship (2012) finished with 6/13. He finished with 6 behind Edward Song and Andrew Tang, tying with Safal Bora after 9 rounds (their individual encounter was a loss for Mike) for share of 3rd-4th at the inaugural North American 2014 Junior chess championship, held at Kitchener's Walper Terrace hotel.


In 2013, he scored 3/5 to win bronze on 1st board for the McGill A team at the Canadian Universities' Interleague Chess Championship.

He joins Fabiano Caruana, Eric Hansen, Alexandre Lesiege, Aman Hambleton, Lefong Hua, Elias Oussedik and Robin van Kampen on the Montreal Chessbrahs(6) team.
