GrahamClayton: AS well as competing in the 1858 California Chess congress, Franklin was also the President of the Congress. Franklin had emigrated from London to San Fransisco in 1849.

jnpope: <Selim Franklin, the oldest British pioneer resident of the city, is lying dangerously ill at his residence, No. 923 Hyde street. <San Francisco <Daily Examiner>, 1886.10.31, p3>> (masthead of page 3 gives 1876, but all other pages give 1886)

<Louis R. Lull has applied to be appointed executor of the will of Selim Franklin, who died October 31st. <San Francisco <Daily Examiner>, 1886.11.06, p3>>

MissScarlett: A newspaper report in the <Warwick and Warwickshire Advertiser> of April 2nd 1831, p.3, covers a court case, <Franklin and another v. Sharman> in which the plaintiff, Franklin, Selim's brother, tried (and failed) to recover £300 from one John Sharman.

For our purposes, Franklin is described as a <respectable bullion-merchant and bill-broker, of Liverpool.> Selim was a clerk in his brother's establishment.

It's not hard to guess why Selim might have found himself in California in 1849.
