Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-29-05  Eastfrisian: Honfi died already on 14.08.1996. in the years 1958 and 1962 he was a member of the Hungarian team on the chess olympiades.

He had already the GM-norm, but was awarded at that time only the IM-title. He never became a GM.

short review (in German): http://www.rochadekuppenheim.de/bub...

Oct-16-11  wordfunph: IM Karoly Honfi represented Hungary in two Olympiads:

1958 Munich = +3=5-2
1962 Varna = +6=3-3

excerpt from Karolyi/Aplin's book Genius in the Background..

<Honfi was an honourable man, and it is rather ironic that his honesty may have contributed to his failure to become a grandmaster. Other players have told me of a tournament where he needed to win his last game to secure the title. His Yugoslav opponent offered to make an 'arrangement' but Honfi refused. In the game he was close to winning, but he spoiled the position in time trouble.>

Nov-19-14  ljfyffe: Member of CC Oympiad IV (1962-1964) team.
Nov-07-15  zanzibar: There is a nice page, w photos, of him here (in Hungarian):

http://sakk-magazin.hu/cikk/kerdes....

He did become a Hungarian GM in 1966. Only in 1975 did he achieve his first FIDE norm. As for the FIDE GM title:

<Not bitter at all races with renewed vigor went into battle, but while the world has changed, the circuit races ousted the Swiss system tournament, making it difficult for older job, execution is the norm. While some frequently used unfair means to this end, he refused to do so. "What good is a title that is bought?" - He asked, often he said. At the time, this view was not alone ...>

Nov-28-15  ljfyffe: Honfi finished 8th in the IV Final of the 1984-1992 Ladies CC World Championship, scoring 6.5/13.
