May-23-15  zanzibar: Is this player related to Nikolay Zhuravlev (dob 1934)?

Nikolay Zhuravlev

Both are from Latvia, are strong players, and are within 4 years of each other.

Harmonizing the spelling here would be a good idea:

Valerij Zhuravliov

Nikolay Zhuravlev

  perfidious: <jess>, same as (K)holmov, (K)hasin, (Y)erevan, etc.

Was just watching the video of the final minute of the 1980 Miracle On Ice and it is comical now, though not at all surprising in those days, how Al Michaels mispronounced (K)harlamov, as though the 'h' were silent and not the (K).

<perfidious>

I knew about the (K)holmov and the (Y)erevan, but I did not know about the av(liov) av(lev) example.

I believe I know a way to find out though- hang on...

ok got it now.

1. Find the Cyrillic name: Журавлёв

2. Put the Cyrillic name in the Google Translator, set for "Russian" and then click on the sound icon.

3. And now the name is clearly pronounced <Zhuravliov>, plain as day.

4. So we should leave Valerij Zhuravliov as is, and change Nikolay Zhuravlev to the more accurately transcribed <Nikolay Zhuravliov> amirite.

A problem arises in choosing <liov> or <lev>.

The google Russian to English translator will always convert <лёв> to <lev>.

But, as shown in the post above, the sound icon will always pronounce <лёв> as <liov>, not <lev>.

So we have a convention of translating to <lev> that is not accurate. At the least, <liov> is a much more accurate transliteration of <лёв>.

So choosing the name will involve sacrificing convention for accuracy, or vice versa. Perhaps a difficult choice.

I would choose <liov> myself.

  Stonehenge: <sacrificing convention for accuracy>

That would mean Baris instead of Boris, Raman instead of Roman etc.

paulalbert: Exactly how to transliterate Cyrillic alphabet into Latin alphabet can be challenging, especially if the Slavic pronunciation does not really exist in English, German, or French for example.

So we get Alekhine, but in German Aljechin where ch in German is similar to X in Cyrillic, but what Kh is supposed to sound like is a mystery to most English speakers.

We see variants like Chigorin and Tschigorin and Korchnoi, Kortchnoi, and Kortschnoi.

Various E forms in Cyrillic also challenging, maybe "ye" and "yo" or even"yaw" might work but awkward, and "sh" and "shch".

<Stonehenge> I ate a lot of Raman in Korea, if that's any help.
