  Tabanus: Westminster Papers, 1 March 1870, p. 180:

<It is with extreme regret we announce the death of Mr. Alfred Jones, a player at Chess and Whist of no little skill. His face was familiar to every member of the Westminster Chess Club and the Old London, at both of which places he was a constant visitor. By his wit, love of fun, good humour, and kindness, he endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact. He was generous and open-hearted, extremely fond of watching a good game at Chess, or examining a problem, or criticising the play at the Whist table. By profession he was a City solicitor, in large practice, and known to his confreres as "Honest Jones," a name to which he was fully entitled.>
