EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951) Philippines

[what is this?]
Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces.

mukhang na typo error ang writer. Checked with Olimpbase and 2012 Olympiad will be in Istanbul Torkey while 2012 will be in GM Carlsen;s territory. Tromso, Norway.

batongol..hope you have a grand day not only today but everyday: )

  spawn2: Chess Olympiad Trivia:

Did you know that the Philippines has not send an all GM line-up to the Olympiad?

2010 - 4 GMs & 1 IM in the person of
then IM Richard "All Star"
Bitoon

2008 - 4 GMs and 1 IM who earned his
GM norm in Dresden - then IM
JP "The Pope" Gomez

Before 2008 Dresden, we did not have enough GMs to complete a 6 man line-up (yes, it was only in 2008 that FIDE reduced the number of members per team to 5)

So, will it be in Istanbul Olympiad where we will finally have the opportunity to send 5 brave Grand Masters?

Or is there going to be an untitled player from the masses who will rise up and capture the hearts of the Filipino chess community with his swashbuckling play and and his never say die tenacity..Abangan

  pinoymaster77: wordfunph,

The likes of nanobrain and Atty Roy should try 'the impossible dream' pero depende sa workload yan...

I am looking out for FM Paulo,IM Dimaks, Elorta & collegiate standouts to make a splash in the Semis in June...(sana!)

While we're at it, could we start posting trivia / tidbits / historical facts on previous Natl Open exploits ?!

  pinoymaster77: For instance,

- Diyan ba naka earth shaking upsets ang then child prodigy na Cusi?

- Dimaks then a La Salle player upsetting AFGM Torre?

- Sino pa discoveries?

- Tutoo ba yung nasa write-ups ni vonvon na as much as mga 14 Open championships na gmjoey? (o ibang tournament kasama sa bilang?)

Calling calling din mga trivia masters or master memorizers Allan D, shadowleaf and of course dito wordfun...

Any actual experiences ma-share ni Iskuba? (yoohhooo, gising na!)

Apr-03-12  Iskubadayb: Bilitid Hapibirtdi, Batongrinski.

Pag dating sa finals, BRADIDIK time! :)

spawn2: Am closely following the Chinese National Championship since its possible that the top 5 players will represent China in the coming Olympiad.

Here are the top 5 players after 8 rounds:

GM Ding Liren
GM Yu Yanyi
GM Ni Hua
GM Wang Hue
GM Lu Shanglei

Below are the players who represented China in the 2010 Olympiad which landed 5th:

GM Wang Yue
GM Wang Hao
GM Bu Xiangzhi
GM Zhou Jianchao
GM Li Chao

You will notice that there is the possibility that only 1 player in the person of GM Wang Yue will be able to do a repeat. The other 4 members will be "new" blood although GM Ni Hua played for China in 2008 and 2006.

Will see how the tournament will unfold.

As for the Philippines, who amongst the players who represented us in 2010 Olympiad will be able to do it again:

GM Wesley So
GM JP Gomez
GM Darwin Laylo
GM Eugene Torre
IM (now GM) Richard Bitoon

Drunken Master.
Apr-06-12  Iskubadayb: Pramis? Nagkaideya ako dyan sa training. Kwento ko dun sa bahay ko mamaya.

spawn2: Hmm..the Chinese National Championship has ended and the 3 "veterans" GMs Wang Yue, Bu Xiangzhi and Ni Hua will combine with the "youngsters" GMs Ding Liren and Yu Yangyi to create a team for the Olympiad. Its a strong team if you will ask me.
Apr-07-12  Iskubadayb: Ubos tayo dyan sa GRO, Dennis. HIHIHI

We do not get this!

pinoymaster77: Was wondering what happened to the other Wang na mas matibay actually, si Wang Hao di pala kasali... I think he is a second to one of Hydra GM/ top 10 player, I think may slot pa din siya kung sa Olympiad, kelangan ng China ang kalibre niya specially vs the top tier teams like Armenia,Ukraine,Russia,Hungary,Azarbaijan etc...
