EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951) Philippines

[what is this?]
Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992*. At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoli Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines.

Apr-21-12  kardopov: <In passing, he said that he also played with Women Champions such as Gapridashvili, Chiburdanidze, Zhu Chen, the Polgar sister, Xie Jun. I know he has very good over-all record against these Lady Champions.> Hindi ba naikwento kung sino pinakamahirap gibain sa mga women's player.

Am sure knowing GM Eugene, he will say that everyone was a tough opponent.

Maganda score nya ke GM Chiburdanidze..it 4 - 0 in his favor.

Tuwing kitakitz namin e kantahan kami nyan habang bumabatols... di pa uso karaoke. Mga baldog lang na nagrereminis hihi. Sayans, di ako kasali.

Salamat sa kwento, Alexhine. Baka may maalala kang di mo nabanggit e dagdag pa. Sarap basahin e. :)

Apr-21-12  TNKL: awit ng barkada tuwing kitakitz at tomaan ... "those were the days" ...

cro777: Spasiba (спасибо)<spawn2>. "Those were the days" is an emotional story of friendship.

Russian Gypsy song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" ("Дорогой длинною", which means "By the long road") reminds me that we are all travelling the long road.

Apr-23-12  pinoymaster77: Good pm,

Took a peek at rd1 of the National finals to say hello to friends and take some pics.

The 3-1-0 format (3 points for a win) is introduced I think for the first time in NCFP event. I think the idea behind this is to discourage many draws and give more mileage for a win.

But in chess circles kanina, there were discussions on the pros and cons of this. Like for example kung merong grupo at may gustong pataasin na isang kasama eh puede rin, then for other contenders they will try to slow them down with draws... anyway, it can be open for discussion on what you view as pros and cons...

Reportedly this format will also be applied to the BOGM / Olympiad qualifiers...

Apr-23-12  Iskubadayb: Wala tayong magawing sa mga WANMANI. They'll always look for an angle. Piksdil dito, piksdil dun. At the end of the day, they still have to score hard-earned wins to make it.

Maganda itong patakaran ngayon ng scoring system ng nfcp. If you are a player, you need not worry about these people. Basta prepa ka, you take care of your own business. I will not worry about these scums if I'm playing. :)

Apr-23-12  Iskubadayb: Meron palang Luneta Chess Open.

If standard format eh too close sa ACC which will start on May 5 and will require our players to be in Vietnam ba or Iraq either May 3 or 4 to have ample time to rest.

Apr-23-12  Iskubadayb: Ah, rapid pala.

Of course, have read many sharings on the exploits of the late chess legend IM Ruben Rodriguez...

Apr-23-12  pinoymaster77: Good am,

As per text from Lilet this am on the Natl finals rd2 about to start, di raw Bilbao system and changed from zero start to 1 hour defaulting time upon request of those staying in the school quarters
