Jul-10-03  Ribeiro: Currently, the Brazilian player with the highest rating (2618).

He won a match against Mecking in 2000 (3,5 - 2,5).

Curiously, "Vescovi" means "Bishops" in Italian.

Jul-10-03  Larsker: Italians have the best last names in the world. Here are some of my favorites: Maiellaro, Invernizzi, Bruscolotti, Scarafoni, Magroppi, Quartuccio, etc. During the season, I often listen to soccer matches on Italian radio over the Internet. Verona in the 90's had one of the best line-up's. The players weren't all that good - but the names were amazing.

Italian is not a language. It's an art form like ballet, music - or chess.

Jul-10-03  Larsker: By the way, bishop (the chess piece) is <alfiere> in Italian. In French it's <fou> which means crazy (person). Now, what on earth would crazy people have to do with chess....

And a correction: The Verona team that won the championship played in the 80's.

Jul-11-03  Ribeiro: <Larsker> Two more names:

- Spanish (Alfil)
- Portuguese (Bispo). "Bispo" can also be a clergyman.

Maybe the piece is a jester in France (fou du roi).

I enjoyed your statement about the Italian language!:-)

Jul-11-03  Larsker: <I enjoyed your statement about the Italian language>

Here's proof:

"Per sfuggire alla peste che sterminava le popolazioni, famiglie intere s'erano incamminate per le campagne, e l'agonia le aveva colte lė. In groppi di carcasse, sparsi per la brulla pianura, si vedevano corpi d'uomo e donna, nudi, sfigurati dai bubboni e, cosa dapprincipio inspiegabile, pennuti: come se da quelle loro macilente braccia e costole fossero cresciute nere penne ed ali. Erano le carogne d'avvoltoio mischiate ai loro resti."

It's the first pages of the novel. By a peculiar coincidence, the webpage is illustrated by pictures from Bergman's The Seventh Seal where Death is playing chess with a knight.

Jul-11-03  Ribeiro: <Larsker> I consider Bergman´s movie a real "capolavoro"!:-)

I liked the text very much!It is interesting, the descriptions brought to my mind images and sensations I had experienced while watching the movie.

Thanks for the proof!

Feb-29-04  ConLaMismaMano: Vescovi is doing very well, recently won a very strong tournament (Bermuda), including players like Gelfand. But at the Aeroflot Open did do very good.
Jul-05-04  vescovi john j: A game well played by Vescovi in bermuda, however i talk of course of giovanni vescovi, and not myself, however i have been more in study on openings and positioning more than ever, i look forward to my lessons and losings to eventually win and become the next Vescovi on the top list

  ketchuplover: ciao :)
Feb-02-05  iron maiden: He's gunning for back-to-back victories in Bermuda now, and doing pretty well. He just took the overall lead with a nice victory over Volokitin.
Feb-02-05  fgh: Nice name ;-)
Feb-08-05  ConLaMismaMano: Anyone following Vescovi-Macieja? Is 6.Bb5+ a novelty?

Aug-19-05  Pawsome: So who is this G. Needleman I asked myself as he rose through the ranks to finish second equal in the FIDE semi-final in Argentina recently? The answer came today in the address posted by <notyetagm> above.
Oct-29-05  TopaLove: I think Vescovi will be the next world champion :)
Jan-30-06  gmgomes: I am not sure what happened to him in Corus. He began very well winning his 2 first games then he began to draw and later to lose. He achieved his 3rd win only in last round.

Dec-12-09  vonKrolock: Wonderful event in <Dixie Land City>... and decided in the last round, when Milos had to win with black to become himself the champ. In the whole, Vescovi displayed a more combative play during the event than his main rival

An Englishman: Good Evening: I know it's roughly 6 1/2 years late to respond to <Larsker>, but Italian is an amazing language. I don't speak it at all, but reading something like The Inferno's Canto V out loud in Italian, the melodiousness still astonishes.
