Benzol: Is Gennadi Timoshchenko related to Georgy Timoshenko. Is the spelling difference significant?

Honza Cervenka: <Is the spelling difference significant?> Yes, it is. Both surnames are similar but not same.

Benzol: <Honza> They are not related then? I thought it might be down to the English translation of the name.

Honza Cervenka: <Benzol> Almost certainly they are not related. Both are Ukrainians (although Gennadi Timoshchenko has now a citizenship of Slovakia) and their surnames are very similar but it is just a coincidence.

By the way, since 1995 Gennadi Timoshchenko is as a Slovak player listed in FIDE register as "Gennadij Timoscenko" which is a Slovak (as well as Czech) phonetic transliteration of his name, of course without diacritical marks. See http://www.chesslive.de/scripts/ser...

Benzol: <Honza> OK, thanks mate. His picture looks like he's just come inside from somewhere very cold as his nose and lips are very red.

Mar-17-10  wordfunph: GM Gennady Timoshchenko studied a database of 150,000 games and came to the conclusion that BxN often makes sense in the opening because a Knight is simply the more useful piece then.
