Phony Benoni: The picture apears to have been taken during the game A Kapengut vs Balashov, 1971 with Kapengut about to play (or perhaps seal) 42.Qxa5 in this position:

Jul-11-10  grasser: I met him at the ATE in Philly. His son and two grandaughters played on the same team.

What an awesome legacy! What an awesome family!

Fusilli: Born on the 4th of July! (I share something with a GM!)

He wasn't on my radar as an emigre to the U.S. When did he come to the U.S.?

Oct-18-13  bravado1: His name sounds German

Fusilli: I still wonder when he moved to the U.S. Does anyone know?

He was very active in the 1960s and 1970s, and after that seems to have played only occasionally. Any recent sightings of GM Kapengut in the U.S.?

Jul-27-17  Eagle41257: Since April 28, 2008 he represents the US Chess Federation.
Oct-06-20  mahaprabhu krishna: https://www.chess.com/games/view/12...

flawless from the black!!!!.. surely a model game for hyper accelerated dragon players for 9. Bb3 variation. the best move for white is 9. Rb1 which no human has tried it seems.

FSR: Kapengut was born on the Fourth of July. It was inevitable that he would end up in the United States.
