MIKHAIL MARKOVICH UMANSKY
(born Jan-21-1952, died Dec-17-2010) Russia (citizen of Germany)

[what is this?]
GMC Mikhail Markovich Umansky was born on the 21st of January 1952 in Stavropol, USSR. As a youth, he placed 2nd in the Russian Junior Championships of 1965 and 1966. In 1968 he achieved the title of National Master, and in 1997 he achieved the title of IM in over-the-board chess. However, Umansky's real specialty is correspondence. In 1978 he became USSR Correspondence Champion, and in 1995 he became the 13th World Correspondence Champion. He placed first in the ICCF 50 Years World Champion Jubilee, a special invitational correspondence tournament involving all living former ICCF World Champions. See 50th World Champions Jubilee Tournament (2003).

In 2009 he accepted the Chessgames Challenge, and was able to secure a draw in 36 moves. That was the best performance attained at the time against the powerful collaborative Chessgames World Team. (See M Umansky vs The World, 2009).

Umansky died of a heart disease in Augsburg, in 2010.

chessgames.com: Please note: it is supremely disrespectful to discuss an ongoing chess game in a public area where the participants may be exposed to the analysis. Even if the analysis is shallow or almost whimsical, it is not allowed. Once the game is over, you can discuss anything you like. Thank you.

kingfu: Thank you Chessgames for having protocol. Would Rybka be offended?
Aug-12-09  Dionyseus: Thanks for the game, it was fun. We were at one point worried because we knew the catalan was one of your favorite openings.

WinKing: Our game was an interesting discussion of the Catalan versus a Semi-Slav. Is the jury still out or do you believe white controls his own destiny in this hybrid opening. I will be curious to hear your thoughts on this game. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to engage us here at chessgames.

karnak64: GM Umansky, thank you for playing this group of amateurs. Several on the team are experienced and skilled players, but a lot of us, like me, are not. So it means a great deal to us to have the chance to meet up with the likes of you. My game is better now because of this experience, and you have my thanks.

I hope you give us another chance to win.

dakgootje: It seems that mister Umanksy has passed away last friday due to a Cardiovascular disease. Perhaps someone can confirm or deny it but the original German source looks rather trustworthy: http://www.schachverbandschwaben.de...

If this is confirmed however, it would be very sad and unexpected news indeed.

His chess game against this World Team might have been the last game he played.

Domdaniel: Possibly the deepest chess player of all time.

And he taught us to play the Catalan, too.

RIP, GMU.

Dec-19-10  theagenbiteofinwit: I'll never forget our game. You were a true pioneer, who regularly employed the Catalan before the world caught on.

You were a champion in every sense of the word. Thank you.
