Vladimir Ivanovich Karasev was born in Leningrad. He was Leningrad champion in 1974 and was awarded the IM title in 1976. He lost play-offs for the Leningrad championship title to Vadim Z Faibisovich (1965) and Mark Tseitlin (1970).

Karasev was the winner of the Rubinstein Memorial (1974). He was Russian Veterans Champion in 2001, 2002 and 2004. European Senior Champion in 2015.
