Rico Mascarinas was awarded the IM title in 1978. He was one of the premiere chess players of the Philippines during the 1980s and the 1990s and for a long period of time he was the No. 2 ranked player of the Philippines behind Grandmaster Eugenio Torre .Rico Mascarinas participated in eight Olympics (mostly on the second board). Playing at the 1982 Olympics in Luzern, he won the gold medal on the 2nd board, undefeated in 9 games, won 6 and drew 3, totaling 7.5 points.
