| Jan-20-05 | | sleepkid: OJC: Don't confuse the issue. He doesn't have a warrant for his arrest for playing chess. He has it for violating U.N. sanctions. True, he violated them by playing chess, and I don't think he should suffer for it. Just a little "Now don't do that again" would be fine. But like I said before, he had to take things too far, and now they will probably throw the book at him. Either way it's his fault. And yes, I know Fischer has a long history of throwing tantrums, but just because we know Fischer is going to spaz out before hand doesn't mean we should bend the rules for him. And last, but not least, you miss the point in my last post. The point being this: Despite my great admiration for Fischer the chess player, I imagine that meeting Fischer the person would be a highly unpleasant experience. I can't think of any redeeming qualities that he has besides the fact that he gave us some great games of chess. As for punching uglybird in the nose, yes, that was a joke, in response to his over the top reaction about my earlier joke about punching Fischer in the nose (I also threatened to punch ughaibu in the nose, but I haven't run into him yet. ;-) Where are you Ugh?) - it was part of a running joke that some of the other users here were sharing. You might have missed it. Or you might not have a sense of humour. If you'd like, I can just pencil you in on my list of people who take things too seriously, right underneath Marnoff Miloney and Uglybird. |

| Jan-20-05 | | kostich in time: Folks, I looked over my last post, and I apologize. I usually..in fact 99% of the time, confine my comments on these boards to Chess, and Chess alone.I allowed my irritaion with Ken Burns-who I still think is a highly over-rated film-maker and human being-to get the best of me. Iwas , largely speaking as a life-time Tigers fan, angry that Burns gave the battling Bengals of Motown such short shrift.
Also, "frog" was uncalled for. Iwas consciously parodying Mr. Limbaugh(who I also cant stand-Imay be a 'conservative', but im avery idiosyncratic and independent one.)who always says that when he uses a French word or phrase.
Again, everybody, Iapologize for losing my temper, and allowing my political opinions to intrude. Now, back to Chess! |

 | | keypusher: Don't apologize, kostich. Everything you said about Burns is true. Plus he has a bowl haircut and a weenie beard. http://www.kodak.com/global/images/... |

| Jan-20-05 | | Malacha: <Kostich in time> This might not be the right page or even the right website to talk about baseball, but I'll keep it short.I didn't see the Ken Burns documentary on Baseball and from what I've read here,I didn't miss much. But,I do have very vivid memories of the Tiger/Cardinal W.S.I was nine at the time and a Cardinal fan,but will never forget the overpowering pitching of McClain and Lolich.I can still to this day, some 37 years later name the starting nine for both teams. Those were the days when Baseball was real and the players played for more than just money. Thanks for bring up that series and the memories that it brings to me. |

| Jan-20-05 | | Stonewaller2: Whilst searching for references to GM Fischer and Baseball I happened on this intriguing Philadelphia Inquirer piece regarding FBI surveillance of him and his mother: http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/ne.... It contains the remarkable claim that his father may have been Romanian, not German! |
| Jan-20-05 | | Stonewaller2: oops, make that Hungarian |
| Jan-21-05 | | MonsieurL: <kostichintime> Apology accepted. I cant speak about Burns, but his Civil War was excellent, for the sheer amount of CW events their were. :) <Stonewaller2> In Quebec, when you call someone a frog, it is one of the worst things you can say... maybe in France it is OK, I dont know. I had a guy call me a pig in French (THE worst term) because he thought I didnt understand him. Glad to see it was cleared up :) |
| Jan-21-05 | | euripides: <MonsieurL> There are some English pubs in France which go by the name of the Frog and Rosbif, so I assume the term is not as sensitive there. Interesting to hear about the difference of the Quebecois context. |
| Jan-21-05 | | ttr2121: NO offense intended, but kostich in time sounds like a parody of a neo-con. It took a minute to realize that it wasn't him just scathing away about the current political climate in our land! Spoooooooooooky! |

 | | Joshka: <stonewaller2> Yes that article has been around now for awhile, and I find it very believable. Sure it was very damaging for Bobby to find out, unless he knew already, that his real father was not German, but Jewish, like his mother. Wonder if there are any photos of Nemenyi to check for any resemblence to Bobby. |
| Jan-21-05 | | TheSlid: Must be difficult for the Japanese authorities to know what to make of it all. No obvious easy way out for them without upsetting the US. <MonsieurL> Calling a french speaker a "frog" is not done in these days through malice, it is more a term of neighbourly disagreement over food preferences. And for someone French to feel put down by English preferences should surely be the joke in itself. : ) |
| Jan-22-05 | | Novice713: That's interesting:
"Can we say you are not willing to change the deportation destination to Iceland?" "You can interpret our stance that way." |

| Jan-23-05 | | akashic: My record with Bobby Fischer is 21-13-32. My last game with him was in 1994. |
| Jan-23-05 | | square dance: <akashic> do you care to elaborate on that post? im sure we'de all love some details such as...what were the years that you played fischer? was his opening repetoire still the same? what were the time controls? |
| Jan-23-05 | | Pawsome: So do I take it from the discussion above that some Limeys don't like Frogs and after the French said "non" to the invasion of Iraq a lot of Yanks don't either? Or am I just a confused Canuck? And, who is the maked man behind the handle akashic? Can't be Geller or Tal. |
Jan-23-05
 | | Gregor Samsa Mendel: <Pawsome>--you didn't hear about the efforts of some conservatives here in the States to get "french fries" renamed to "freedom fries?" There was even a joke about it last night on Saturday Night Live--something about how W. prefers the name "liberty pudding" to "creme brulee." |
| Jan-23-05 | | sleepkid: square dance: Notice that akashic didn't say it was "chess" games. Probably 21-13-32 in parcheesi matches with Fischer. ughaibu: why is it that I always think you live in Nagoya or Kyoto? |
| Jan-23-05 | | kostich in time: I understand no 'offense' was intended, but I am a little puzzled as to why I sound "like a aparody of a neo-conservative". I am, in fact, what Brits used to call a "tory radical". If I am ,in any sense, an American conservative, I am a conservative in the manner of my great hero,Abraham Lincoln. It was, in fact on Abraham Lincoln (and Frederick Douglass, the great Black orator and publicist)that I wrote my doctoral dissertaion, which I am now going to turn into a publishable book. |
| Jan-23-05 | | square dance: <sleepkid> well, the tone of my post is meant to convey my suspiciousness. |
| Jan-24-05 | | pkjohn146: <square dance>, <sleepkid> thinks maybe <akashic> has a 21-13-32 score against Fischer in Parcheesi. My guess is tic-tac-toe. Its just a wild crazy guess, though. Most probably speed games... |

 | | Hanada: Hey Fischer fans, I need your help. I am making a little documentary about Fischer for fun in my spare time. Nothing big, just a little I-movie I am going to start making in my spare time. When I finish it I am going to put it on my website and will send everyone links to it. What I need is links to any cool sites about Fischer or any interviews with people who knew him....anyhting, pics audio and vide clips..anything. Thanks in advance. |

| Jan-24-05 | | Franz the Stampede: <In 1971 he set another record, when he won the quarter-final and semi-final matches for the world championship by identical scores of 6-0. Then, when he won the first game of the final match, he had thus set a record of 20 consecutive wins (without draws) at the highest level of competition.> this is one of the most impressive things I read about Fischer and chess in general...
Does anyone know how much was that as a rating performance? |
